NORTHRIDGE, CA---
No. 22 CSUN Water Polo (9-12) dropped a pair of matches to Big West foes on Saturday at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational inside Corona del Mar Pool. The Matadors suffered an 11-8 loss to No. 9 UC Santa Barbara and a 15-8 defeat to No. 15 Long Beach State. Madeleine Sanchez led the Matadors offensively with six goals on the day while Katelyn Fairchild scored four and Amy Yule tallied three. Freshman goalkeeper Nathalie Brewster started both matches and collected 15 combined saves.Â
The Matadors got off to a quick start in the morning game against the Gauchos. Yule lit up the scoreboard first with a goal less than 90 seconds into the match and Fairchild put CSUN up 2-0 at the 4:27 mark. Scoreless for nearly six minutes, the Gauchos cut the lead to 2-1 on a strike from Natalie Selin.Â
After a low-scoring first period, the two sides would pick up the scoring in the second quarter. UCSB scored two consecutive goals out of the gate, but the Matadors responded with a Sanchez goal to even the game at the 6:01 mark. The Gauchos' Taylor Shore would have a huge second quarter, scoring three times including two straight goals to put her team ahead 5-3. Moments before halftime, Fairchild knocked in her second goal of the match with 26 seconds remaining to bring CSUN to within 5-4.
Following intermission, Sarah Kreiser and Sarah Snyder each hit the net in the first two minutes of the third period to push the lead to three. CSUN would have an answer as Yule scored 35 seconds later and Shannon Hovanesian connected at the 4:35 mark to again bring the Matadors to within one. UC Santa Barbara closed the quarter in strong fashion, however, scoring three times to extend its advantage to four. Sanchez got back into the scoring column on a penalty shot with less than a minute to play to cut the lead to 10-7.Â
With 14 goals scored over the last two periods, both sides would engage in a defensive struggle in the fourth. After four minutes of scoreless action, the Gauchos took an 11-7 lead on a goal from Kreiser. CSUN finally cut into the lead again on a strike from Fairchild, but it would not be enough as UCSB held on down the stretch.Â
Fairchild picked up three of CSUN's seven assists in the match while Sanchez collected three steals. In net, Brewster racked up seven saves and a steal.Â
Looking to bounce back, CSUN played the 49ers in a close battle throughout most of the first half. In the first quarter, Long Beach State struck first with a pair of goals from Alexandra Massier. The Matadors countered with a goal from Yule with less than three minutes on the clock. Sanchez later squared the game up 2-2 on a penalty shot but the 49ers would take a 3-2 lead on the next possession.Â
The two sides went back-and-forth in the early moments of the second quarter. Falling behind 4-2, Sanchez brought CSUN to within one, and Hovanesian would do the same moments later on a goal at the 4:14 mark. With its lead down to one, LBSU would turn things around down the stretch of the quarter. Annabel Harman, Virgina Smith and Tori Morrissey all hit the back of the net to extend the lead to 8-4. Sanchez connected on her third goal of the game, and her second penalty shot, to make it 8-5 heading into intermission.Â
In the third quarter, CSUN surrendered three goals including two on the power play to fall further behind. Sanchez provided the Matadors with their only offense in the quarter with a goal at the 2:20 mark but the Matadors found themselves trailing 11-6 after 24 minutes.Â
The Matadors kept battling in the fourth as both Fairchild and Carly Wickman each scored but a comeback would not be in the cards. Long Beach State added four more goals in the period to post the 15-8 victory.Â
Starting for the second-straight game, Brewster stopped eight shots in front of the cage. Hovanesian registered three assists against the 49ers while Sanchez picked up three steals.Â
The Matadors will play their final game at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational on Sunday morning against either Loyola Marymount or San Diego State at 9 a.m.Â
