CSUN Falls 4-0 To Hawai'i

Matadors Fell 4-0 to San Diego Earlier on Trip
HONOLULU --- The CSUN women's tennis team dropped its first Big West match of the 2017 season Tuesday morning, falling 4-0 at Hawai'i in a rain-delayed match. Earlier on its trip, CSUN fell 4-0 to San Diego, but the Matadors got some strong performances against the Toreros.Â
"We were short-handed USDÂ against and I am proud of the way we fought through that adversity," said CSUN head coach Gary Victor. "Mickey Hsu showed so much character and toughness to play through injury and we are looking forward to being whole as a squad."Â
Hsu made her season debut against USD and won the first set of the No. 2 singles match after a lengthy tiebreaker, but had to retire from the contest in the second set. Vivian Lin and Emma Roenholt also lost in straight sets and the Toreros claimed the doubles point.Â
Once the rain abated, CSUN and Hawai'i finally met Tuesday morning and played singles only. Skyla Alcon, Lin, Kristen Poei and Arpe Bagumyan all fell in straight sets to their conference rivals.Â
In unfinished matches, Kiryang Kim led her No. 2 singles match with Petra Melounova, 7-5 and 3-2, when the competition was stopped. That performance, against a rival who was coming off a win against a nationally ranked opponent from Ole Miss, was a good sign for Victor.Â
"We played short-handed again, without Elisa Elhadj or Mickey, and I think we competed very well," Victor said of Tuesday's match. "Ki is on an incredible run and has a great deal of confidence. Dating back to last season, she has now won six-straight completed singles matches and is 11-2 in her last 13 overall."Â
Upon arriving home, CSUN will resume action with another Big West contest in its next match. The Matadors will travel to face Long Beach State on Feb. 11 with first serve slated for noon. They will then have two weeks off before returning with a home match against San Jose State at 10 a.m. on Feb. 25.Â
