Channon Fluker Posts 17 Points with 13 Coming in 4th Period
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Sophomore Channon Fluker scored 13 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter to help lift the CSUN women's basketball team (12-11, 5-4 Big West) to a 62-55 victory at UC Santa Barbara Thursday night. Fluker also tied a career high with 20 rebounds for the second-straight game while junior Serafina Maulupe scored 17 of her game-high 22 points in the first half as the Matadors completed the season sweep of the Gauchos.Â
The Matadors led by eight at halftime, but the game really tightened up in the fourth. UCSB got back to within two points with just over five minutes to play. Fluker answered with a basket and added a free throw to reestablish a 52-47 lead with just over three minutes to play. From there, Fluker, Tessa Boagni and Cheyenne Allen made enough of their free throws to salt away the victory.Â
Fluker finished 5-of-12 from the field and 7-of-14 from the free throw line. She had 14 defensive rebounds in the win, the second-most in CSUN's Division I history for a single game. She added two assists, a block and a steal in 32 minutes of work.Â
Maulupe had a sensational first half, scoring 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field and 3-of-7 from 3-point range. She added four rebounds and an assists in 38 minutes of work.Â
Playing in her first game since Jan. 21, senior Emily Cole finished with 10 points off the bench and did not miss a shot from the field. She added two rebounds in 19 minutes while Tessa Boagni pulled down 13 rebounds to go with four points, two assists and a steal in 34 minutes.Â
The first quarter was a game of runs. CSUN jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead only to see UCSB respond with an 11-0 run. However, the Matadors closed the frame with a 7-0 run of their own. In the second period, Maulupe scored nine points as CSUN built a 10-point lead early in the period.Â
In the third, Cole came through with a pair of key jump shots to keep CSUN ahead by nine to start the fourth.Â
As a team, CSUN shot 36.2 percent (21-of-58) from the field and 40 percent (6-of-15) from downtown. The Matadors held a 53-36 advantage in rebounds and scored 16 points in the paint to go with 18 second-chance points. UCSB finished at 31.3 percent (20-of-64) and 23.1 percent (6-of-26) from 3-point range.Â
CSUN remains on the road for its next contest, traveling to UC Riverside on Saturday, Feb. 11. Tip off between the Matadors and Highlanders is set for 5 p.m. from the SRC Arena.Â
