NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Senior Daphne Pofek tossed a two-hit shutout while fellow seniors Taylor Glover and Katie Hooper had big days at the plate as the CSUN softball team (16-11) defeated Quinnipiac 8-0 in six innings Sunday afternoon at Matador Diamond as part of the Matador Classic. Glover finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases while Hooper was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a triple and a home run as the Matadors dispatched of the Bobcats.
Playing as the visiting team at Matador Diamond Sunday, CSUN jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Taylor Nate reached on an error and scored on an RBI double from Glover. After stealing third, Glover scored on a sac fly from Jessica Alexander and Hooper blasted her fifth home run of the season over the fence in center to give the Matadors a 3-0 lead.
That would be more than enough offense for Pofek (6-4) as the senior fanned a season-high eight batters in the win. After Quinnipiac started its half of the first with a single and walk, the senior settled down and retired the final 13 batters she faced.
In the fifth, CSUN added three more runs. Nate was hit by a pitch and Glover put down a bunt single to put runners on the corners with one out. Alexander than singled to score Nate and Glover scored on an RBI triple from Hooper.
In the sixth, Mackenzie Babbitt and Karlie Habitz singled to start the frame. After Pudi Hernandez came in to run for Habitz, the two scored on a two-run, two-out single from Glover to give CSUN an 8-0 advantage.
With her two steals, Glover became just the fifth player in Big West Conference history to amass 80 steals in a career and she currently ranks fourth in league history with 81. Her three hits give her 258 in her career, which ties for the seventh-most in conference history, and her two runs Sunday moved her into a tie for 10th in conference history with 145 in her career.
Hooper moved into a tie for fifth in CSUN history with her 29th career home run and her two RBIs Sunday moved her into third in school history with 142 in her career. Nate extended her streak of reaching safely to a team-high 20-straight games while Glover extended her hitting streak to 13-straight games.
The Matadors wrap up the Matador Classic with a doubleheader against Murray State on Monday, Mar. 20. First pitch of game one is slated for 11 a.m. from Matador Diamond.
