Game One Recap
The Matadors pounded out 14 runs and 15 hits to defeat the Racers in game one. In addition to Horvath and Hooper's strong performances, Taylor Glover. Jessica Alexander, Madison Fleming and Tara Kliebenstein all had multi-hit games. Glover was 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBIs, two stolen bases and a double while Alexander was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. Fleming was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI while Kliebenstein went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs.
CSUN started quickly with two runs in the first. With one out, Glover doubled and quickly stole third. She then scored on a two-out RBI double to right by Hooper, who scored on an RBI single by Fleming. The Matadors then struck for six runs in the second.
With one out, Karlie Habitz drew a walk and moved to second on a single by Kliebenstein. Taylor Nate then singled to load the bases and Habitz and Kliebenstein scored on a two-run single by Glover. Alexander then singled up the middle to score Nate and Glover and after Hooper and Fleming reached base safely, the pair would score on a two-run single from Horvath.
In the fourth, Alexander and Hooper strung together one-out singles and with two outs, scored on Horvath's three-run bomb. The home run was Horvath's fifth of the season and the RBIs represented a new career high for the junior.
To its credit, Murray State scored three runs in the third and four more in the fifth to keep the game close and avoid a run-rule defeat. CSUN starter Daphne Pofek (8-3) picked up the win with 4.1 innings of work and four strikeouts. Taylor Troost would toss the final 2.2 innings, allowing just two hits over the span.
CSUN responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to conclude the scoring. Habitz drew a walk to start the frame and Pudi Hernandez came in to run for her at first base. Kliebenstein singled and Nate set down a sac bunt to put runners in scoring position with one out. Glover drew a walk and the fourth ball was also a wild pitch that allowed Hernandez to score. Hooper then delivered a two-run single up the middle to score Glover and Kliebenstein.
Game Two Recap
In game two, CSUN continued to swing a torrid bat and produced nine hits and 11 runs in a five-inning victory. The Matadors hit two home runs and two two-run triples in the victory. Alexander was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored and RBI while Horvath was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Fleming had both a home run and a triple in the win and her five RBIs set a new career high.
The Racers started the game with a triple to center field, but Troost would strand that runner on the third by retiring the next three batters. In their half of the frame, Nate drew a walk and scored on an RBI double from Alexander.
That run was all Troost (7-4) needed as she kept Murray State without a hit after the lead-off triple. She finished with five strikeouts and no walks to post her fourth shutout of the season.
The Matador offense continued to roll with three runs in the second. Horvath singled to start the inning and Mackenzie Babbitt drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Habitz successfully dropped down a sac bunt to move them into scoring position and Kliebenstein belted a two-run triple to right to clear the bases. She would then score a wild pitch.
CSUN added four more runs in the third. Alexander and Hooper both singled and then scored on Fleming's two-run triple. She then walked home as Horvath blasted her second home run of the day to put CSUN ahead 8-0.
In the fourth, Glover drew a walk and Alexander moved her to third with a single to right. With two outs, Fleming cleared the bases with a three-run home run to left field. The deep fly was her fourth of the season and she now has a career high 19 RBIs and 12 runs scored on the season.
When all the dust settled after a prolific day at the plate, several Matadors continued their climbs up the career charts in both Big West Conference and CSUN history. Glover's two steals temporarily moved her past UC Davis' Briana Warner for third in Big West Conference history with 83 career steals. Warner is a senior for the Aggies and has 18 this season to Glover's 14. The 83 steals, a program Division I record, place Glover second in CSUN history as she passed Matador Hall of Famer Barbara Jordan on Monday.
With two hits on the day, Glover moved into sixth in Big West Conference history with 260 in her career. That total also moved her past Jordan for second in school history and represents a new program Division I record. She also owns the program's Division I record for career runs with 149, a total which ties her for eighth in conference history. She also has 131 career RBIs, ranking fifth in CSUN history. Her 34 doubles ranks sixth in school history.
Hooper's three RBIs increased her career total to 145, the ninth-most in Big West Conference history and the third-most in CSUN history. She is up to 42 career doubles, the second-most in school history and three away from setting a new school record. Her 29 career home runs is tied for fifth in school history.
Horvath's two home runs on the day gives her 28 in her CSUN career, tying her with Mikayla Thielges for seventh in school history. She also ranks fourth in school history with 44 career stolen bases.
CSUN returns to action on Sunday, Mar. 26 with a doubleheader at CSU Bakersfield.
