Junior Kiryang Kim Wins No. 2 Singles Draw
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's tennis team (7-8) fell 6-1 to Princeton Monday afternoon in a non-conference match at Matador Tennis Complex. Junior Kiryang Kim returned from a three-match absence to win her No. 2 singles contest, but the Tigers won several close sets in singles to post the victory over the Matadors.Â
Playing for the first time since Mar. 7, Kim won in three sets in her second draw (6-3, 6-7 (2) and 10-8) to improve to 6-4 on the season. She and teammate Skyla Alcon, who lost a tough No. 4 singles match, were singled out by head coach Gary Victor after the loss.Â
"We competed well today against a very good Princeton squad and the credit goes to them for winning the close sets. Kiryang put on a great effort after being out for the last three matches. Skyla played the best tennis we've seen in a while and she's kept the faith through the tough times. There are big things ahead for her and this team as we enter April," Victor said.Â
In other singles action, Mickey Hsu, Emma Roenholt, Kristen Poei and Vivian Lin all lost in straight sets for CSUN. Princeton won the doubles point after claiming a 6-4 decision in the No. 1 match and a 6-0 victory in the No. 3 draw.Â
Despite the loss, Hsu and Poei continue to build upon their doubles legacy for the Matadors. The tandem is currently 49-22 over their three-plus seasons at CSUN, the most victories ever by a doubles team by more than 25 wins. The duo has received First Team All-Big West honors the past two seasons.Â
CSUN is off until Mar. 24 when they travel to New York to square off with NYU and Hofstra.Â
