Junior Kiryang Kim Improves to 8-4 in Singles Play
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's tennis team (9-8, 3-2 Big West) defeated UC Davis 4-2 in a Big West Conference match at the Matador Tennis Complex. Senior Kristen Poei won her team-best ninth singles win while junior Kiryang Kim claimed a three-set victory and the Matadors won the first of four-straight conference home matches to get ready for the 2017 Big West Tournament.Â
"Today was another hard-fought match between two quality groups of young women. The teams played straight-up and fair while leaving it all on the court. We have a ton of respect for their players and coaches," said CSUN head coach Gary Victor.Â
In doubles play, the Matador won two of the three matches to earn an early 1-0 advantage. In the second draw, the tandem of Kim and Elisa Elhadj posted a 6-4 victory to claim the point. On court three, Emma Roenholt and Skyla Alcon also posted a 6-4 decision for the Matadors to improve to 5-3 on the season.Â
In singles play, Kim won the third draw with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 decision. She is now 8-4 on the season and has won four-straight singles matches. Her performance against the Aggies drew the praise of Victor.Â
"We are very proud of Ki for her effort today. She and Elisa won the deciding doubles contest and she then clinched the match in singles," Victor said. "We have been beset by injuries lately, so we will see who is able to go Sunday against UC Santa Barbara."Â
In other singles action, Alcon and Poei each won the opening set of their fourth and sixth draw, respectively, before their UCD opponents had to retire from the match. Poei is now 9-4 on the season and 7-1 in the Matadors' last 10 matches. Alcon is now 6-8 and the winner of two-straight singles draws.Â
The Matadors and Gauchos tangle on Sunday, April 2 at 10 a.m. at Matador Tennis Complex.Â
