Senior Kristen Poei Improves to 10-4 in Singles
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Senior Kristen Poei won her singles match, but the CSUN women's tennis team (9-9, 3-3 Big West) lost 4-1 to UC Santa Barbara Sunday morning in a Big West Conference match at Matador Tennis Complex. Poei, who is 7-1 over the Matadors' last 10 matches, won in straight sets, but the Gauchos were able to win the crucial points and claim the conference victory.Â
Poei won 6-4 and 6-2 in her No. 6 draw to bring CSUN to within 3-1 at the time. However, the Gauchos were able to win the next singles match to finish and seal the victory. Poei is 8-2 in the sixth draw this season.Â
In doubles, the Gauchos won at No. 1 and No. 3 to take the early advantage. CSUN's No. 2 team of Elisa Elhadj and Kiryang Kim led 5-4 in their match before it was halted. Other singles actions saw Mickey Hsu and Elhadj both win a set before their contests were stopped due to a final result having been established.Â
"We fought hard today, but just could not convert on some big points in our doubles play," CSUN head coach Gary Victor said. "Kiryang and Elisa were about two points away from winning in doubles and Elisa and Mickey had some success in singles. Today was another solid result for Kristen, who has been awesome this season."Â
The Matadors have two Big West Conference matches left in the 2017 season. Both are at home beginning with an April 13 match with UC Irvine. First serve between the Matadors and Anteaters is slated for 2 p.m. from the Matador Tennis Complex.Â
