Senior Daphne Pofek Tosses No-Hitter in Game One
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Senior Daphne Pofek tossed her first career no-hitter in an 8-0, five-inning victory and the Matador offense mounted a rally in a 3-2 victory in game two as the CSUN softball team (12-9) defeated Sacred Heart twice Tuesday afternoon at Matador Diamond. After the game opened with an infield error, Pofek was perfect in dispatching the Pioneers for the 67th no-hitter in program history. In the second game, the Pioneers struck for a pair of runs in the fifth, but CSUN answered with three of its own in the bottom of the frame and Rebecca Bell earned the win with nearly three full innings of relief work.Â
A 2016 First Team All-Big West and Third Team NFCA All-West Region honoree, Pofek (5-3) had 16 strikeouts and faced just one batter over the minimum. The Pioneers did not get a ball out of the infield and the performance gives CSUN no-hitters in consecutive seasons. For the year, Pofek owns a 2.20 ERA with 27 strikeouts and an opponent .227 batting average in 51 innings of work.Â
At the plate, reigning Big West Player of the Week Jessica Alexander continued her strong play with a three-run home run for her team-leading fifth deep fly of the season. Taylor Glover finished 2-for-2 with a run scored and a stolen base while Taylor Nate went 1-for-2 with two runs and stolen bases. Madison Fleming added a two-run double while Savannah Horvath and Alyssa Vazquez had a base hit and RBI apiece.Â
In the first, CSUN scored a run on a fielding error by the Sacred Heart shortstop. In the third, Nate singled to start the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. After Glover was hit by a pitch, the two executed a double steal to move into scoring position. With two outs, Fleming smacked a double off the wall in left to clear the bases. Horvath then dropped in a double in right to score Fleming and she then scored on an RBI single from Vazquez.Â
In the fourth, Tara Kliebenstein was hit by a pitch and Glover singled with one out. That set up Alexander to clear the bases with a blast over the fence in left. Pofek then got another quiet frame in the fifth to secure the no-hitter and run-rule victory.Â
The second game was a much different affair as all five runs were scored in the fifth inning in the Matadors' 3-2 victory. Kliebenstein and Glover each had two hits while Alexander drove in another two runs to give her 14 RBIs over CSUN's last four games.Â
The Pioneers opened the game up with two runs in the top of the fifth after stringing together two doubles and a single off CSUN starter Taylor Troost. With a runner on second and one out, Bell (3-2) left the Sacred Heart runner on base with a strike out looking to end the inning.Â
In their half of the fifth, the Matadors quickly regained the lead. Nate doubled to left to start the inning and Taylor Glover reached on an infield single. Glover then stole second and both she and Nate scored on a two-run single from Alexander. Horvath then reached on a fielder's choice that moved Alexander to third and Fleming picked up the game-winning RBI on a groundout.Â
Bell got strikeouts on the final out of both the sixth and seventh inning to earn her sixth career victory. She did not allow a hit in 2.2 innings to go with three Ks and a walk. She owns a 2.73 ERA with 18 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .217 in 25.2 innings of work.Â
The Matadors continue their homestand with three games this weekend as part of a multi-team, multi-day tournament at CSUN. Co-hosted with LMU, Matador Diamond will feature four games each day starting at 8 a.m. from Mar. 10-12. CSUN will open the event Friday with games against North Dakota (8 a.m.) and Arizona (10:30 a.m.) and then close out the tournament with a game against Bakersfield on Sunday at 4 p.m. A complete tournament schedule can be found here.Â
