Karlie Habitz blasts 2-Run Home Run in Victory over Fighting Hawks
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (13-10) defeated North Dakota 8-0 in five innings and fell 10-1 to No. 5 Arizona in six innings Friday morning in a pair of non-conference games at Matador Diamond. Against the Fighting Hawks, Karlie Habitz blasted a two-run home run and Katie Hooper added two RBIs to back up a one-hitter in the circle from senior Daphne Pofek. Against the Wildcats, Taylor Nate scored a run but the Arizona offense proved too potent.Â
In game one, Pofek (6-3) allowed a lead-off double in the first and that was it as she has now allowed just one hit over the past 10 innings after tossing a no-hitter against Sacred Heart on Mar. 8. She finished with one walk and seven strikeouts and improved her season ERA to 2.00 with an opponent batting average of .214 in a team-high 56 innings of work.Â
Offensively, CSUN collected 10 hits in the win. Habitz was 1-for-2 with her second home run of the season while Hooper was 2-for-3 with a double. The two-bagger was the 40th of Hooper's career and at 137 career RBIs, she is now ninth in Big West Conference history. Nate was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a stolen base while Savannah Horvath and Jessica Alexander both added steals in the win.Â
CSUN struck for six runs in the bottom of the third. Nate started the frame with a walk and after moving to second with one out, scored on an RBI single from Alexander. Hooper then doubled to right to score Alexander. Autumm Cauthron came in to run for Hooper and scored on an RBI single from Horvath. After stealing second, Horvath scored on an RBI single from Mackenzie Babbitt and she walked home on Habitz's two-run blast.Â
Madison Fleming drove in a run in the fourth and in the fifth with two outs and the bases loaded, Hooper was hit by a pitch to end the game.Â
In game two, CSUN scored a run in the first but could not capitalize on a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the frame. Taylor Glover and Hooper each had two hits for CSUn and Fleming earned a tough RBI by being hit with a pitch with the bases loaded in the first. Glover added her third double of the season and 33rd of her career.Â
Arizona hit a solo home run in the first off CSUN starter Taylor Troost (4-3). In the third, the Wildcats added a two-run home run to chase her from the circle. Troost allowed three runs and four walks in two innings of work. Rebecca Bell came into relieve her and went 3.1 innings with three runs and four walks. Katie Chenault and Cheyenne Noli got the final two outs of the game in the top of the sixth, when Arizona scored four times to enact the run-rule victory.Â
CSUN is off until Sunday, Mar. 12 at 4 p.m when they host CSU Bakersfield.Â
