NORTHRIDGE, CA - After a second round 289, the CSUN men's golf team moved up four spots into a tie for eighth after 36 holes Monday at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, AZ.
The Matadors were 12th after posting a first round 294 but shaved five shots off that total in round two and are now just six shots out of the top five heading into Tuesday's final round.
"We didn't play the par fives very well today, we definitely threw away some shots," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "I think we should have played better in the first round but we bounced back and played better in the second round. With a good final round tomorrow, we can certainly move up a few more spots."
Junior Felix Mory fired rounds of 73-71 and is tied for 23rd at even-par 144. Mory had two birdies in an opening round 73 before carding six birdies in round two's one-under 71. Mory heads into the final round just one shot out of the top 20 as he seeks his sixth finish inside the top 20 this season.
Senior Sam Engel had six birdies over the opening two rounds and is currently tied for 42nd at three-over 147. Engel opened with a one-over 73 before posting a second round two-over 74. Tavit Garadedian and Tomas Skajem are both tied for 49th at four-over 148. The CSUN pair each opened with a four-over 76 before bouncing back with an even-par 72 in round two.
Junior Trym Falch opened with an even-par 72 before struggling off the tee in round two and posting a 10-over 82. Falch is currently tied for 86th at 10-over 154. Michael Zhang is also competing for the Matadors as an individual and is tied for 93rd at 13-over 157 after rounds of 75-82.
Long Beach State (567) takes a four-shot lead over UC Santa Barbara (571) in the team chase into Tuesday's final round while Sacramento State's Aaron Beverly and the 49ers' Joe Fryer share the individual lead at seven-under 137.
The final gets underway Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. as CSUN tees off on the seventh tee.
