NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN men's golf team carded a final round 296 Tuesday and finished 11th in the 18-team Wyoming Cowboy Classic at Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, AZ.
The Matadors sat eighth after rounds of 294 and 289 on Monday but were passed by Denver, Utah State and Wyoming over the final round and narrowly missed their seventh top 10 finish of the 2016-17 season.
"It was kind of a frustrating day today," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "We continued to struggle on the par fives today and realistically that made the difference between us and a top 10 finish. It was just a combination of poor decisions and poor execution. But we've got one more tournament at Cal Poly to figure things out before the Big West Championship at the end of the month."
Junior Felix Mory came within a stroke of his sixth top 20 finish of the season as he carded a final round 72 to finish even-par for the day and even-par 216 for the tournament. Mory was one-under through 12 holes but a bogey five at No. 1 and pars the rest of the way kept him at even par for the day.
By finishing tied for 22nd at even-par 216, Mory has now been CSUN's low player eight times in 10 tournaments this season.
Tomas Skajem and Tavit Garabedian completed three rounds with the same exact score as the duo tied for 51st at six-over 222. Each carded rounds of 76-72-74 as Garabedian had one birdie, one bogey and one double bogey while Skajem had three birdies along with three bogeys and one double bogey. Garabedian posted 40 pars over 54 holes, the third-best total in the 110 player field.
After opening with rounds of 73-74, senior Sam Engel posted a final round five-over 77 to slip from 42nd to 66th at eight-over 224 while Trym Falch rounded out the CSUN five by tying for 87th at 14-over 230 (72-82-76). Michael Zhang also played individually and tied for 100th at 26-over 242 following rounds of 75-82-85.
UC Santa Barbara fired a final round 16-under 272 to overtake day one leaders Long Beach State to claim the team title while the Gauchos' Zach Smith (-10, 206) won individual medalist honors by one shot over Sacramento State's Aaron Beverly.
The Matadors next travel to Arroyo Grande to compete at the Cal Poly Shootout next week (Apr. 17-18).
