Kristen Poei Continues Solid Senior Season with Singles Win
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Senior Kristen Poei and sophomores Skyla Alcon and Elisa Elhadj won in singles, but the CSUN women's tennis team (9-10, 3-4 Big West) lost 4-3 to UC Irvine Thursday afternoon in a Big West Conference match at the Matador Tennis Complex. CSUN will take on Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, April 16 for Senior Day as the Matadors honor their seniors on the 2017 roster: Mickey Hsu, Vivian Lin, Samantha Judan and Poei.Â
Poei improved to 11-4 overall and 5-1 in league play with a straight-set victory in the sixth draw, winning 6-3 and 6-3. She is 7-1 over the Matadors' last 10 matches and now owns a career mark of 45-25 heading into Saturday's regular season finale.Â
Elhadj improved to 4-1 on the season with a 7-5, 6-1 decision in the No. 3 draw. She also moved to 2-1 against conference foes in her first season in the Big West. Alcon won in three sets, finishing off her fourth draw 5-7, 6-1 and 6-2. She improved to 7-9 overall and 3-4 against conference opponents for the year.Â
In doubles action, the Matadors claimed the first match to finish as Poei and Alcon stormed to a 6-2 decision in the third draw. However, the Anteaters claimed the first and second matches to earn the point. The second draw, featuring Kim and Elhadj, went to a tiebreaker after a deadlock 6-6 after 12 games.Â
The Big West Tournament runs from April 27-30 in Indian Wells, CA. At 3-4 in conference play, the Matadors are currently fifth in the standings and would play Cal State Fullerton, their opponents Saturday, in the quarterfinals as of today. First serve Saturday is slated for 11 a.m. from the Matador Tennis Complex.Â
