Katie Hooper Blasts Walk-Off Home Run in Bottom Seventh
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Senior Katie Hooper blasted a 2-1 pitch over the fence in left field in the bottom of the seventh as the CSUN softball team (22-13, 2-2 Big West) defeated Hawai'i 6-5 Friday afternoon in the first game of a Big West Conference series at Matador Diamond. Senior Taylor Nate and junior Savannah Horvath also homered in the comeback victory while senior Rebecca Bell picked up the win with over five innings of relief work.
Trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth, CSUN cranked three home runs over the final three innings to defeat the Rainbow Wahine. Nate started the rally with a solo shot to center in the frame for her second home run of the season.
After Bell worked a quick frame in the top of the sixth, Madison Fleming started the bottom of the inning with her third double of the season. She then walked home as Horvath hit a screamer over the fence in left to tie the game. Horvath now has 29 career home runs, tying her with Christen Bedwell for sixth in program history.
That set up Hooper's dramatics to start the bottom of the seventh. The home run was her seventh of the season and 31st of her career, moving her into sole possession of 10th in Big West Conference history. The RBI was her 28th of the year and 151st of her career, tying her for sixth in Big West Conference history.
Taking over for CSUN starter Taylor Troost in the top of the second, Bell (4-2) allowed three hits and two earned runs over 5.2 innings of work. She retired the last seven batters she faced, putting down the side in order in both the sixth and the seventh.
CSUN started the game by scoring twice in the bottom of the first after the Rainbow Wahine committed three errors in the field. Nate and Glover both scored a run and Jessica Alexander added an RBI single. For Glover, the run was the 153rd of her career and ties her for fourth in Big West Conference history.
Hawai'i struck for three runs in the top of the second and two in the top of the fifth. All five runs scored on home runs.
Alexander, Hooper and Horvath each had two hits in the win. With her home run, Nate extended her streak to 28-straight games reaching safely. She also added a sacrifice bunt in the win.
