NORTHRIDGE, CA - Ysabel Tran earned CSUN's first top 10 finish since 2014 while the Matadors finished eighth as a team Tuesday at the Big West Women's Golf Championship at Oak Quarry Golf Club in Riverside.
CSUN posted its second team round of 305 Tuesday but could not move up from eighth place, finishing the championship with a score of 916 (305-306-305).
Tran, who began the day tied for third, struggled over a five hole stretch Tuesday but rebounded over the final eight holes to earn the Matadors' first top 10 showing at the conference championship since Clariss Guce tied for first in 2014. Tran's three round 224 was also the lowest by a Matador since Guce finished at 217 at San Luis Obispo Country Club.
The CSUN sophomore was one-over heading to the No. 6 tee but a bogey five followed by a double bogey at No. 8, a bogey at No. 9 and a triple bogey at No. 10 dropped Tran to seven-over for the round. She bounced back to par the final eight holes to remain at seven-over for the day and and eight-over for the championship which was good for a 10th place tie.
A pair of Matadors tied for 31st as Shenna DeLeon and Kayla Yn each finished at 17-over 233. DeLeon had a pair of birdies as she finished with a final round four-over 76, her low round of the championship. Yn was even through seven holes after a trio of birdies on holes two through four. But Yn finished eight over over the final 11 holes to finish at eight-over 80.
Freshman Alice Duan had CSUN's best round of the championship Tuesday as she fired a two-under 70, the best round by a Matador since Guce's second round 69 in 2014. Duan, who posted rounds of 79-88 Sunday and Monday, had four birdies and was four-under through 10 holes before a pair of bogeys over the final eight holes kept her at two-under for the day and 21-over 237 for the championship.
Fellow freshman Brianna Steger completed the Matador lineup as she posted a final round 10-over 82 to finish the championship with rounds of 83-77-82 to finish tied for 39th at 26-over 242.
"I'm proud of the effort we showed this week," said CSUNÂ head coach Gina Umeck. "We improved a lot as a team since the fall and I'm looking forward to next season."
