NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Loyola Marymount capitalized on a pair of bounces in front of the CSUN net to defeat the Matadors 2-0 in men's soccer exhibition action Saturday night.
The score remained 0-0 after the first 45 minutes with both teams recording four shots. The Lions posted three consecutive corner kicks in the 10th and 11th minutes before the Matador defense turned away the scoring chances.
LMU took the lead at the 54:16 mark when CSUN goalie Henrik Regitnig made a save on a Kris Fourcand shot. The rebound came back out in front where Griffin Bell gained possession, took a shot and scored. The Lions scored again in the 80th minute. John Bovill took a shot that Regitnig saved. The rebound again came out in front to Francis Avoce who made an attempt that Regitnig turned away. The ball remained out front where Matt Gooden converted on the third attempt for a goal.
Twenty-two Matadors took the field Saturday night while 20 Lions saw action. LMU outshot CSUN 12-9 (5-4 on goal). Both teams posted six corner kicks.
"We created enough opportunities to do well," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "They took advantage of their opportunities. I like how our team is playing and I see a lot of positives out there. Tonight gave us a chance to see what we have to work on. That's why you have exhibition games. We need to get better before we play Siena. We are going to work hard on the practice field and hopefully amend this loss and go forward from here."
The Matadors open the regular season next Friday night when CSUN hosts Siena. The CSUN Sports Network is scheduled to begin coverage at 7 p.m. For ticket information head to GoMatadors.com. You can follow on Twitter at @GoMatadors or @CSUNMensSoccer.
