Saint Mary's Edges CSUN With A Late Goal 2-1
8/27/2017 8:01:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Jake Rudel's goal with just over three minutes remaining in the second half gave Saint Mary's a 2-1 victory over CSUN in men's soccer action Sunday night.
Â
The Gaels took the lead in the 18th minute when Anders Engebretsen dribbled into the Matadors' box. Engebretsen sent a crossing pass to Lucas Andrews in front where he converted on the opportunity.
Â
CSUN put pressure on the Saint Mary's defense. The Matadors finally broke through to tie the match in the 76th minute. Mauricio Lopez passed the ball towards Saint Mary's goalie Remi Prieur. The ball would go off a Gaels' defender and found its way to the right foot of Daniel Trejo. Trejo took his only shot of the match and sent it past Prieur for the goal.
Â
The teams exchanged several offensive chances in the final 15 minutes before the Gaels were able to take advantage of space within the CSUN defense. Jacob Svehlik used his dribble to create the game winning chance for Rudel. Â
Â
"We played against a team that was resilient and is a good football team," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "We came back with about 15 minutes to go, but we couldn't maintain the pressure that resulted in the goal. We let down, Saint Mary's stayed mentally tough and won the most important part of the game, the last 20 minutes. It wasn't so much what we didn't do, but you have to commend them for what they did. We aren't there yet. We have a lot of work to do, but we are going to get there."
Â
The Matadors begin a three-match road trip next Friday at nationally-ranked Utah Valley. The Wolverines, No. 16 in the current Top Drawer Soccer Top 25, defeated No. 13 Akron 1-0 in the 2017 season opener for UVU Friday night.
Â
"Utah Valley is going to be ranked in the top 10 this week after beating Akron at Akron this weekend. We made the non-conference schedule tough in order for us to be ready for Big West time and hopefully we can be competitive in the Big West. We have a formidable opponent ahead of us and will have to play our best game in order to beat them."Â
