CSUN scored a pair of goals in the first 16 minutes at No. 14 Utah Valley as the Matadors defeated the Wolverines 2-1 in men’s soccer action Friday night.
OREM, Utah—CSUN scored a pair of goals in the first 16 minutes at No. 14 Utah Valley as the Matadors defeated the Wolverines 2-1 in men's soccer action Friday night.
Â
"Utah Valley is one of the toughest places to play in college soccer," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "We battled and came away with a good result."
Â
The Wolverines pressed early, resulting in four early shots. The Matadors took the lead on the first shot of the match that the team took. CSUN overloaded the left side on an offensive attack in the 14th minute. Michael Flores sent a ball into the goalkeeper's box towards Daniel Trejo. Trejo finished off the play with his second goal of the year, a blast from 10 yards out.
Â
"Michael sent the ball through the left side," Trejo said. "I was able to use my speed to get through their two back defenders and was able to get across. The goalie came out a bit and I was able to send the ball in for the goal."
Â
CSUN increased the lead a little over four minutes later. A Matador player was fouled just outside of the 18 where CSUN was awarded a free kick. Jordan Kinoshi took the attempt. His shot found the top left of the UVU net for a 2-0 score.
Â
"I was able to get the ball in the final third," Kinoshi said. "I went to the inside and beat the defender and drew the foul. The free kick was something I have practiced for a long time and I'm glad it went in."
Â
Utah Valley got on the board with 11:41 to go in the first half. The Matadors were whistled for a foul, resulting in a free kick opportunity for the Wolverines. Nick Harguindeguy sent his shot into the top right corner of the CSUN net. The score remained 2-1 heading into halftime.
Â
The Wolverines' Gui Leme took the first three shots of the second half. On his third attempt (in the 56th minute), Leme's flick just went wide of an open CSUN net. UVU was awarded a corner in the 58th minute and played the ball short, working the ball into the Matadors' box. Alec Felix headed the ball towards CSUN goalie Henrik Regitnig who made the save. The Matadors' first attempt of the second half was an Ehi Isibor tally which nearly was redirected past Wolverine goalie Jose Wheelright.
Â
Leme put an attempt from long range in the 71st minute, but Regitnig came away with the save. Both teams were more aggressive on offense as time began to run out. CSUN and UVU were both called for offsides in the final 10 minutes. A Wolverines' throw with just over four minutes remaining was flicked towards the CSUN net. Regitnig was able to pull the ball out of the air and regain possession for the Matadors. Â
Â
Harguindeguy took a corner kick with exactly two minutes to go in regulation. The ball was headed out of bounds by a UVU player. CSUN was called for a pair of fouls in the final 25 seconds. Each time, the Matador defense held firm and turned away the Wolverines, leading to the victory.
Â
Regitnig made five saves on the six UVU shots on goal. The Wolverines would outshoot CSUN 12-4 for the match (6-4 on goal). Utah Valley (1-1) held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks on the night.
Â
The Matadors (2-1) head to the University of New Mexico next weekend as CSUN enters the Grange and Ashwill Invitational. The Matadors face the host Lobos (1-2) Sept. 8 with kickoff set for 6 p.m. CSUN wraps up the tournament Sept. 10 against No. 4 Denver (2-0) in a match that begins at 11:30 a.m.
