A Brian Illoski penalty kick in the 51st minute proved to be the difference as UCLA defeated CSUN 2-1.
LOS ANGELES—A Brian Illoski penalty kick in the 51st minute proved to be the difference as UCLA defeated CSUN 2-1 in men's soccer action Sunday night.
The first 10 minutes of the match saw much of the action played in the middle of the field. UCLA took the first shot of the night, a Santiago Herrera attempt in the 11th minute and it was saved by Henrik Regitnig. Joab Santoyo took a long pass from Anderson Asiedeu that he put on Regitnig. Regitnig was able make the save in the 14th.
The first CSUN shot of the night was memorable as Daniel Trejo scored in the 17th minute. Trejo dribbled in close, with his effort deflecting off a UCLA defender for his fourth goal of the season. The Bruins tied the score in the 22nd minute. Santiago Herrera's blast off an Eric Illoski pass knotted the score.
Brian Illoski's shot on the next UCLA possession was blocked out of bounds, resulting in the Bruins' first corner of the night. CSUN defended the set piece successfully. The Matadors were issued a yellow card which led to a Bruins' free kick. The ball was sent in toward Eric Holt. Holt's header went to the left of the CSUN goal where Regitnig was able to knock out of bounds. The Matadors successfully defended the following UCLA corner kick.
The Bruins posted their third corner at 39:40. The Matadors swept away the opportunity, mounting an offensive opportunity that resulted in a Nicholas Grinde shot that went high. The seventh and final UCLA shot of the first half was Milan Iloski's with a little under two to go.
Coming out of the break, the Matadors earned a corner in the 49th minute, but UCLA was able to send ball away from their own goal. The Bruins went ahead for good in at 50:18. UCLA drew a CSUN foul in the box, resulting the Bruins being awarded a penalty kick. Brian Iloski converted the attempt for a 2-1 lead.
UCLA (3-3) posted the next three shots, all three were wide of the CSUN goal. After a Michael Flores shot went high, the Matadors were able to force a UCLA foul. The resulting free kick was nearly headed in by Alex Lara before going off a Bruins' player to earn CSUN a corner kick. CSUN worked the ball near the UCLA net before the Bruins were able to send the ball out.
The Matadors' Jordan Kinoshi took a shot that was blocked in the 79th minute. A late CSUN rush was negated when the Matadors were called for offsides with just over three to go.
"We played hard enough to get the win," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "But we didn't play with enough quality to get the win."
The Matadors (5-4) open Big West Conference play Thursday afternoon when CSUN travels to Sacramento State. The match will begin at 4 p.m.
