UC Irvine began the fourth quarter on an 10-0 run to power the Anteaters to a 56-47 victory over CSUN in Big West women's basketball action Saturday afternoon.
IRVINE, Calif.—UC Irvine began the fourth quarter on an 10-0 run to power the Anteaters to a 56-47 victory over CSUN in Big West women's basketball action Saturday afternoon.
Â
With the score tied 5-5 three minutes into the first quarter, the Anteaters scored 11 of the next 15 points on the floor to take a seven-point lead at the end of one. Channon Fluker scored the first six CSUN points of the second quarter to key an 8-0 run that gave the Matadors a one-point lead. The 6-4 center would record 10 of the first 12 CSUN points of the frame as the Matadors trailed 22-21 at the media timeout. Fluker would end up scoring seven in a row as CSUN would go ahead 25-21. The Anteaters responded with five in a row as the score would end up 26-26 at halftime. Fluker scored 14 of the 17 CSUN points in the second quarter.
Â
Despite going to the free throw line six times in the first six minutes of the third quarter, CSUN only made two of the attempts. The Matadors would limit UC Irvine to two field goals during the same time as CSUN led 31-30 during the media timeout. The teams would exchange 7-0 and 6-0 runs that resulted in the Anteaters leading 39-38. The Matadors played for the final shot which resulted in a Hayley Tanabe mid-range jumper that was good for a 40-39 CSUN lead at the Buzzer.
Â
Saiki and Jordan Sanders scored the first two field goals for the 'Eaters to begin final frame. After a pair of CSUN misses, Sanders again hit from the elbow. A Matadors' turnover resulted in a Sanders jumper from the free throw line and a 47-40 lead. CSUN called timeout. The Matadors again turned the ball over which led to a Saiki layup. Â CSUN scored for the first time at 5:06 of the fourth when Fluker put back a Tanabe miss. A Yazzy Sa'Dullah three-pointer with just under four to play put the game away for UC Irvine. The Anteaters would outscore the Matadors 17-7 in the fourth quarter.
Â
"The bottom line was that we didn't score enough points to stay competitive in the fourth quarter," said CSUN head coach Jason Flowers. "To that point, we did a pretty good job of controlling the tempo. We didn't score inside and missed some wide-open shots from the outside. Conversely on the other end, they had way too many opportunities to score against a defense that wasn't set. Anytime you are on the road, you have to be able to defend. I thought we did that well in the first half, but when you turn the ball over, it makes it tough on your defense."
Â
The game featured 15 lead changes and eight ties. The Anteaters limited the Matadors to 30.9% shooting for the game (15-of-49) and forced 19 turnovers. Sanders paced UC Irvine (13-9, 5-2 Big West) with 20. Green scored 16 while Saiki had 11. Fluker charted her 45th career double-double with 25 points and 15 rebounds. Tessa Boagni grabbed 12 rebounds and scored eight points for CSUN.Â
