Matadors Host Hawai'i to Open Big West Play

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball kicks off Big West play this Saturday evening against Hawai'i on The Blacktop @ The Matadome. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m. and the game will be aired live on ESPN3. An audio only broadcast will also be available on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health with Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister on the call. The Matadors come into conference play with a two-game winning streak after defeating Morgan State 79-69 on Saturday evening. CSUN led by as many as 18 points in the game and never trailed in the second half. Following up on his career-high 33 points against San Diego Christian last Wednesday, senior Tavrion Dawson scored 20 points, collected nine rebounds and dished out three assists. Senior Reggie Theus Jr. posted a career-high 16 points while senior Micheal Warren recorded 15 points and five rebounds and junior Lyrik Shreiner dished out five assists with 10 points.Â
Dawson earned Big West Player of the Week after averaging 26.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in two wins a week ago. The award was the third of Dawson's career and the first of the season. In the Big West, Dawson is fifth in the league in scoring with 16.1 points and ninth in rebounding with 5.9 rebounds. He is also shooting 44.4 percent from the field and 71.9 percent from the free throw line. Dawson is rapidly approaching 1,000 career points as he sits on 945 heading into the weekend.Â
Warren remains to be the only player in the Big West Conference to average at least 13.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. This season, Warren is averaging a career-high 13.2 points and 6.4 rebounds to go with 2.1 assists. He is also shooting an exceptional 85.6 percent from the free throw line and 43.1 percent from the 3-point arc.Â
Also averaging in double figures, freshman Terrell Gomez is scoring 10.7 points and a team-best 3.1 assists this season to go with 52.7 percent shooting from the 3-point arc. Also in his first season with CSUN, Shreiner is averaging 8.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists. Theus Jr. is averaging a career-high 5.9 points and 2.4 rebounds but has seen his offensive production increase to 8.8 points per game in four starts.Â
CSUN will be featured eight times on ESPN3 during Big West Conference play this season after its game on Jan. 20 against Cal Poly was selected as a wild card date this week. On the network this season, the Matadors will host UC Davis (Feb. 1), UC Riverside (Feb. 14) and Cal State Fullerton (Feb. 28) and hit the road for contests at UC Riverside (Jan. 17), UC Irvine (Feb. 7) and Cal State Fullerton (Feb. 17).Â
The Rainbow Warriors lead the all-time series with the Matadors 14-4 and have won the last six meetings. CSUN's last win over Hawai'i came on March 13, 2014 in a overtime 87-84 win at the Big West Tournament. Last season, Hawai'i swept CSUNÂ but only won by a combined seven points. Dawson averaged 16.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game against the Rainbow Warriors in 2016-17.Â
A Closer Look at Hawai'i
The Rainbow Warriors are 9-5 this season after falling to Long Beach State 89-81 on Thursday evening to open Big West play. Now 0-2 on the road this season, Hawai'i's only other road game took place on Dec. 2 at Utah in an 80-60 loss. In his third season at the helm, head coach Eran Ganot has led Hawai'i to a 51-26 record.Â
Junior Sheriff Drammeh leads Hawai'i with 12.0 points to go with 3.4 rebounds this season. Senior Mike Thomas, who missed all of last season, is averaging 11.4 points and a team-best 5.7 rebounds while senior Gibson Johnson is posting 10.3 points and 5.1 rebounds. As a team, the Rainbow Warriors are second in the conference in assists per game (14.9) and third in points per game (73.1).Â
