CSUN Concludes Play At Weinman Foundation Invitational
1/6/2018 3:19:00 PM | Women's Tennis
HONOLULU—The CSUN women's tennis team completed play at the University of Hawai'i's Weinman Foundation Invitational Saturday. In a scheduling quirk, the Matadors played all of their singles and doubles matches against opponents from Washington State.
Â
"There was a considerable improvement in our energy, fight, and playing level today," said CSUN head coach Gary Victor. "Competing well on every court with a top-40 program like Washington State should give our players the deserved confidence for the upcoming dual match season."
Â
Arpe Bagumyan recorded the lone CSUN singles victory as she defeated Ege Tomey in three sets; 4-6, 6-3, 10-5. Kiryang Kim and Mari Taslagyan both went down 4-0 in their first set against their respective opponents before battling back to tie. Unfortunately for the Matadors' players, both would fall in straight sets.
Â
Monika Van de Vondel battled back from going down a set against Barbora Michalkova before tying the match with a 6-2 second set victory. Michaklova would edge Van de Vondel 10-5 in the third to take the victory. Skyla Alcon took a 5-2 lead in the first set against Tiffany Mylonas before the Cougars' player came from behind to win 7-5, 6-1.
Kim and Taslagyan earned the CSUN doubles victory and the Matadors' duo defeated Michalkova and Melisa Ates by a 7-6 count.
Â
"We are happy for Arpe to get the win, she's worked so hard and improved so much," Victor said. "Ki and Mari got down 4-0 but never showed disappointment or weakness and were able to come all the way back for an impressive win in the tiebreaker. Skyla and Monika got up 5-2 and played at a very high level overall. Alicia played her best tennis of the week to win her first set. More than the closer level of competition we had today though, we carried ourselves with a great deal of confidence and energy."
Â
CSUN resumes play Jan. 19-21 when the Matadors travel to the Long Beach State Winter Invitational.
