NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's tennis team (9-5) defeated the Omaha Mavericks, 4-1 Thursday at Matador Tennis Complex for its fifth consecutive victory.
The Mavericks claimed the doubles point after wins on courts one and three.
Â
CSUN struck first in doubles on Court No. 2. Emma Moratalla Sanz and Sandra Arguelles earned a 6-1 win over Jacqueline Pearsall and Shelby Smith.
Â
The Mavericks would then win the next two doubles matches to clinch the doubles point.
Â
Nina Wiese and Katelynn Kock defeated Angela Ho and Nicole West, 6-3, on Court No.1, while Khayli Buckels and Summer Shannon topped Madison Shepperson and Satsuki Ishikawa, 6-2, on Court No. 3.Â
Â
CSUN responded in singles play by taking four completed matches to secure the team victory. Ishikawa put the Matadors on the board first with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Pearsall on Court No. 5 to even up the scoring at one apiece.Â
Â
Sofia Dermenjyan followed with a win on court six after Corinne Barber retired during a tightly contested second set. Dermenjyan evened the set at 6-6 and led the tiebreak, 6-4, when the match ended.Â
Â
Moratalla Sanz gave CSUN the lead for good with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Kock at No. 3 singles. This was Moratalla Sanz's ninth victory in a row in singles play. Her win gave CSUN a 3-1 lead.
Â
CSUN would then clinch the match on the back of West. The graduate student from Tarzana defeated Weise, 6-3, 6-2 on Court No. 2. West shared some thoughts on CSUN's fifth win in a row.
Â
"The win felt good. It was super hot today. We lost doubles so we started off a little bit slow. It says a lot about the character of the team that we were able to bounce back quickly. I got my first match clinching win today, so everyone was very excited for me.
Â
"We just have beliefs in ourselves," West added about the win streak. "Our teammates pick us up whenever we struggle and cheer whenever we win. We feel good going into tomorrow's conference match against Fullerton."
NOTES OF THE GAME
"We started off poorly but got it together in singles. I'm very happy for Nicole to clinch today. She has been a great Matador in every way."
