10/27/2018 10:06:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
DAVIS, Calif. - Senior Aeryn Owens had 22 kills to move into second place in CSUN history in kills but the Matadors dropped a 3-1 decision at UC Davis Saturday in a Big West Conference match at the Pavilion.
The 21-25, 25-14, 25-18, 28-26 loss drops CSUN to 6-17 overall and 2-9 in the Big West. The host Aggies avenge an earlier five-set loss to the Matadors, improving to 14-9 overall and 6-5 in conference play.
KEY STATISTICS
• Owens led all hitters in the match with 22 kills, hitting .263 on a match-high 57 attacks. The senior from Rancho Cucamonga now has 1,490 career kills which trails only Laura Walter (1,694) in school history. Owens also added 12 digs for her team-leading ninth double-double of the season.
• Junior Morgan Salone added seven kills, hitting .368 on 19 swings while Nicole Nevarez chipped in six kills, four blocks and two digs.
• Senior Kristey Markle scooped up a match-high 22 digs in the loss.
• UC Davis totaled 62 kills to CSUN's 44 while out-hitting the Matadors .220 to .172. The Matadors did out-block to Aggies, 10-9.
• Emily Allen led UC Davis with 18 kills while Brianna Karsseboom added 10 kills and 20 digs.
SET 1
The Matadors got off to a good start as kills from Nada Dragovic and Owens gave CSUN a 10-6 lead. A Brianna Johnson kill maintained the Matadors' four-point lead (13-9) before three straight Aggie points cut the lead to one. But a Lexi McLeod kill and a co-block by Nevarez and Johnson boosted the lead back to 15-12. UC Davis would get within one several times, the last at 18-17, before CSUN closed the set on a 7-4 run to take the set 25-21.
SET 2
The two teams were even for the first 22 points after a co-block by Dragovic and Johnson forged an 11-11 tie. But four straight points by the Aggies opened up a 15-11 lead. A UC Davis hitting error following a Matador timeout pulled CSUN within 15-12 but the Matadors would get no closer as the Aggies closed the set on a 10-2 run.
SET 3
The Matadors dropped four of the first five points before clawing back to within 8-5 on an Aggie service error. Still trailing by just three at 14-11, the Matadors surrendered a 6-2 run as UC Davis opened up a 20-13 cushion on its way to 25-18 win.Â
SET 4
Needing a win to stay in the match, the Matadors fell behind 11-7 before calling timeout. The hosts looked to have the match in hand when the Aggies teamed up to stuff an Owens attack giving UC Davis an 18-10 lead. Three straight CSUN points trimmed the lead to 18-13 but three straight Allen kills quickly built the lead back to eight at 21-13. The Matadors, however would no go quietly as a Nevarez kill sparked a 10-2 CSUN run that evened the score at 23-23. After Markle's service error set the Aggies up with match point, the Matadors saved one match point and two others before a CSUN hitting error gave the hosts the 28-26 win.
