Matadors Fall at LMU 79-64
11/13/2018 8:52:00 PM | Men's Basketball
LOS ANGELES, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball dropped a 79-64 decision at Loyola Marymount on Tuesday evening at Gersten Pavilion. Freshman Lamine Diane led the Matadors in scoring with 15 points to go with eight rebounds, five assists and three blocks. Sophomore Terrell Gomez notched 14 points and three assists while Elijah Harkless added 10 points and four assists.
"The youth of our team is something that I don't want to become an excuse," said head coach Mark Gottfried. "We have to grow up fast, and we have to figure it out. We took ourselves out of some things. We panicked a little bit, we weren't solid with the basketball and turned it over. I think more than anything for us, our foul shooting's got to improve. We gave away so many points at the line and then on top of that, we probably had six, seven, eight five-foot shots we couldn't make. For us, we've got to figure out, even with a young group, how to settle down, take a deep breath, have some poise, not get panicked and play better basketball."
The Matadors shot 40.0 percent from the field while the Lions shot 49.1 percent for the night. CSUN would go 5-for-13 from the 3-point line (38.5 percent) but just 15-for-28 (53.6 percent) at the foul line. On the flip side, the Lions would shoot 18-for-23 from the charity stripe (78.3 percent) on the night. CSUN was also out-rebounded by a 41-26 margin.
The Lions came out quickly, scoring the game's first seven points in the opening 96 seconds of the contest. LMU would build as big a lead as 13-2 in the first half before the Matadors stormed back with consecutive 3-pointers from Gomez and Harkless to cut the lead to five. Darius Brown II later brought the Matadors to within 17-15 at the 10:05 mark on a jumper from mid-range.
CSUN would trim the deficit down to two points on three separate occasions in the half but was unable to pull in front. Alex Sokol nailed a 3-pointer that made it a 24-22 game but the Lions scored the next four points. Diane collected three steals in the first half including a swipe near midcourt where he would take the ball the other way for a driving layup. LMU though would take a 36-31 lead at the break.
After committing nine turnovers in the first half, the Matadors continued to have problems taking care of the ball in the early stages of the second half. CSUN would turn the ball over five times in the first four minutes, giving the Lions a chance to stretch their lead. LMU scored the first eight points of the period to lead 44-31 before Diane ended the streak with a dunk at the 15:57 mark.
CSUN would chip away at the lead, scoring five-straight points, capped off by an old-fashioned 3-point play from Michael Ou that cut the lead to single digits. Ou later scored on a tip in, bringing CSUN to within 50-42 with 12:59 on the clock. However, the Matadors came up empty on the next two possessions while the Lions scored seven in a row to extend to a 57-42 lead.
Diane brought CSUN closer at 57-46 on four-straight points but the Lions responded with another 10-2 run, punctuated by a layup from James Batemon. Down the stretch, Jared Pearre scored seven late points off the bench to help keep CSUN in the game. However, the Matadors' comeback bid would fall short as LMU led by double-digits the rest of the way.
For the Lions, Batemon led all scorers with 21 points to go with 10 assists while Mattias Markusson chipped in with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
The Matadors return home on Saturday evening to take on Portland. Tip off is slated for 6 p.m. at The Matadome. Coverage will begin on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health at 5:50 p.m.
