Saturday's game starts a stretch where the Matadors will play four of their next six games inside the friendly confines of The Matadome. CSUN welcomes in Tennessee State next Tuesday (Nov. 20) before heading to Washington State the following week (Nov. 27). From there, the Matadors kick off December with a Saturday game with Sacramento State (Dec. 1) and then travels to Pepperdine on Dec. 3. CSUN concludes the stretch with another home game against Cal State San Marcos on Dec. 5. The Matadors will host 16 games this season, which ties a program record.
The Matadors returned to action this past Tuesday at Loyola Marymount as the Lions prevailed 79-64. After the Lions raced out to a 13-2 lead, the Matadors fought back to cut the deficit to 36-31 at the half. However, LMU used another strong second-half start to build a double-digit lead. CSUN battled down the stretch but the Lions would hold on for a 15-point victory.
For the second-straight game, freshman Lamine Diane led all Matadors in scoring as he finished with 15 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three blocks. Sophomore Terrell Gomez collected 14 points and three assists while freshman Elijah Harkless added 10 points and four assists. The Matadors earned their way to the free throw line with 28 attempts on the night but they just converted on 15 of those shots. CSUN though forced 20 turnovers for the second-straight time this season.
The Matadors are currently first in the Big West in steals per game (11.0), offensive rebounds per game (14.0) and assists per game (17.5). Individually, Diane leads the Big West with 24.5 points per game while Gomez is fifth at 17.5 points this season. Diane is also leading the league in steals per game (3.5) followed by Darius Brown II (3.0) and Harkless (2.5).
CSUN and Portland have faced off four times in men's basketball with the Pilots winning three of those games. However, the teams played three of the four games from 1964-67 before competing once again in Nov. 2016 at the Wooden Legacy tournament where Portland won 96-78. Junior Mahamadou Kaba-Camara is the only player among the two teams to have competed in that contest two seasons ago. The Matadors are hosting the Pilots for the first time in team history on Saturday as CSUN seeks its first win over a West Coast Conference team since beating San Diego in Nov. 2012.
A Closer Look at Portland
The Pilots are 1-2 on the season after dropping a pair of games at the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu last weekend. Portland fell to host Hawai'i 82-64 on Friday and suffered a 78-73 defeat to North Texas on Saturday. The team opened up the season with a home win over Multnomah 111-103 on Nov. 6. The Pilots were picked to finish 10th in the West Coast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.
Sophomore Marcus Shaver Jr. leads the Pilots in scoring average at 20.0 points to go with 3.3 rebounds. Shaver Jr. was named an All-West Coast Conference Honorable Mention last season. Junior Josh McSwiggan is averaging 19.0 points and 5.7 rebounds while sophomore JoJo Walker is scoring 12.3 points and 3.3 assists. A former 17-year NBA veteran, Terry Porter is in his third season as the head coach of the Pilots.
