NORTHRIDGE, CALIF- The CSUN Track & Field program have added Matt Conly as an assistant coach for the 2018-19 year, Matador head coach Lawrence Johnson announced. Conly will work with the CSUN throwers along with handling administrative responsibilities.
"Matt brings a great deal of knowledge and experience to our programs and more specifically, our throwers." Johnson said. "He is smart and has a very good eye for talent and details. We are fortunate to have him join our Matador track and field family."
Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Conly joins the Matador staff after two seasons at the University of Minnesota, and five seasons at Bowling Green State University. At both schools he served as an assistant coach for the throwing program.
At the University of Minnesota, saw success in a variety of ways. Conly coached the NCAA Outdoor qualifier in the hammer throw (Kieran McKeag) and coached the NCAA Indoor 10th place finisher in the Heptathlon and Big Ten third place finish in the Decathlon (Teddy Frid) in just last season alone. For the Golden Gophers discus team, he coached the fourth place finisher at the USATF Junior Championships. Conly also coached NCAA 3rd place finisher in the Decathlon (Luca Wieland - 2017).
Prior to Minnesota, Conly coached at Bowling Green from 2011-2016, where he coached four All-Americans, four Mid-American Conference Champions, four East Preliminary Round Qualifiers, and four school record holders. Perhaps his biggest accomplishment at Bowling Green came in the form of coaching hammer thrower Brooke Pleger. Pleger earned First Team All-American Honors after finishing third in 2015, third in 2014 and seventh in 2013. The Mid-American Conference record holder in the hammer, Pleger was an Olympic Trials Finalist in 2016, finishing eighth.
Conly graduated Ball State University in 2008, where he dual majored in physical education and health science. At BSU, he competed for the Cardinals' track and field squad before it was disbanded after 2003. Conly finished third in the javelin at the 2003 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships and was an NCAA Mideast Regional qualifier that year. In 2002, he finished eighth at the MAC Championships and set a BSU freshman record in the javelin. The native of Ohio ranks third on Ball State's all-time list in that category.
