EUGENE, Ore.---CSUN's Kyriaun Davis earned a top-20 finish in the men's discus on Friday at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships inside historic Hayward Field.Â
An Oceanside native, Davis made his first career appearance at the NCAA Championships, finishing 20th overall in the 24-athlete field. His top throw came on his third and final attempt, which reached 57.26m (187-10). He also registered a mark of 56.17m (184-3) in round one of the event.
Davis became the first Matador men's athlete to advance to nationals in the discus since Derek Cooper in the 2008 season.Â
Friday completes an outstanding first season for Davis at CSUN. He qualified for the NCAA Championships with a ninth-place finish at the NCAA West First Round in Fayetteville, Ark. Among his accolades, Davis won the Big West discus title this season, breaking his own school record in the process with a mark of 58.41m (191-8).
Prior to Davis establishing a new discus record in May, CSUN's Rick Meyers held the top mark in program history since 1984. Overall, Davis won three discus competitions this season.Â
ACCORDING TO COACH JUSTIN JOHNSON
"In the first of what I believe will be many trips to the national championships, Ky looked like a veteran out there. He stayed composed and competed well. I'm very proud of him and I believe he has a lot of big throws in his future. Keep an eye on this young man. He's just getting started."
