UC Riverside (8-16, 3-9 Big West) has split its last four matches which includes a 3-2 win over UC Irvine last Friday. The Highlanders, 4-5 at home this season, are led by sophomore Yulia Ushakova who had 12 kills in the loss at CSUN. Nailah Jones put down a team-high 13 against the Matadors last week. OWENS RANKS SECOND IN CSUNÂ HISTORY IN KILLS
After becoming the third player in school history to surpass 1,400 career kills earlier this season, senior Aeryn Owens became just the second CSUN player with at least 1,500 career kills last week. With 19 kills against UC Riverside and Hawai'i, she upped her career total to 1,506 career kills.
Owens became just the third player in CSUN history with over 1,400 kills when she knocked down her 11th kill at Hawai'i on Oct. 13. Her 13th and final kill against UC Riverside last Tuesday (Oct. 30) gave her 1,500 in her Matador caree. The senior from Rancho Cucamonga passed Missy Clements (1991-94) two weeks and now ranks second only to Laura Walter. Walter holds the CSUN record for career kills with 1,694 from 1998-2001. Owens opened the 2018 season ranked 11th in school history and has moved past nine players this season (Angela Hupp, Mahina Haina, Alexis Cormier, Cieana Stinson, Casey Hinger, Natalie Allen, Nancy Nicholls, Kathleen Dixon, Clements) on the Matador career kills list. Â
CAREER NUMBERS
In addition to Owens, senior Kristey Markle ranks tied for 10th in CSUN history with 90 aces which also places her sixth in the Matadors' rally scorng era. Senior Erin Indermill has played in 326 career sets and has 638 career digs and 603 career assists along with 47 aces. Indermill ranks eighth in CSUN's rally scoring era in assists with 603. COACHES CORNER
Matador head coach Jeff Stork shares his thoughts each week on the team, this week's matches and other topics.
On the conclusion of the 2018 season: "I think these are three challenging but winnable matches this week and next week. Fullerton has struggled lately and Riverside is a dangerous team. We had a team discussion this week about what we want to get out of these last three matches. We talked about our core values and bringing your best effort and overcoming all obstacles. We want to come in as competitors saying we still have things we want to accomplish."
