CSUN Hits .347 in 3-1 Road Win at Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. - Senior Aeryn Owens and junior Morgan combined for 29 kills as the CSUN Matadors hit a season-high .347 in a 3-1 victory at Cal State Fullerton Friday at Titan Gym.
Set scores were 25-16, 23-25, 25-12, 25-17 as the Matadors improve to 8-18 overall and 4-10 in the Big West. The Titans drop to 6-20 overall and 0-13 in conference play.
KEY STATISTICS
• Owens led all hitters in the match with 19 kills, hitting .364 on 44 attacks. The senior from Rancho Cucamonga, who also added eight digs and one ace, now has 1,525 kills in her CSUN career.
• Salone added 10 kills, committing just a pair of hitting errors while hitting .421. The junior from Eastvale also added six blocks.
• Senior setter Erin Indermill posted 26 assists, seven digs and two aces while junior setter Kamalu Makekau-Whittaker just missed her fourth double-double of the season with 24 assists and nine digs.
• Senior libero Kristey Markle led all players with 21 digs while also posting six assists.
• CSUN hit a season-high .347 (64-14-144) while also setting a season-high with 11 aces. Markle and Lexi McLead each had a match-high four aces for the Matadors.
• Felicia Marshall the Titans with 14 kills to go with 10 digs.
SET 1
With the score tied 4-4, kills from Owens and Nada Dragovic, along with an ace from Indermill and a Titan hitting error gave the Matadors the lead for good 8-4. After the hosts cut the CSUN lead to 14-13, the Matadors went on a 4-1 run, capped by kills from Dragovic and Owens to open up an 18-14 cushion. CSUN extended the run to 6-1 following a Fullerton timeout and the Matadors had their largest lead of the set (20-14) until the final margin of seven.
SET 2
The Matadors led by three (3-0) in the early going before the Titans answered with a 4-0 run. The two teams then played even, ultimately forging a 17-17 tie. Fullerton then took advantage of a pair of CSUNÂ hitting errors to take a 20-17 lead. The Matadors would get within two in the latter stages before before Marshall's kill gave the Titans set point at 24-22. Kills from Salone and Owens saved two set points before the hosts closed the frame 25-23.
SET 3
Five straight CSUN points snapped a 4-4 tie giving the Matadors 9-4 lead. After the Titans trimmed the lead to 12-9, CSUN went on a 6-0 run to open up an insurmountable 18-9 lead. The Matadors would extend the run to 13-3 as they closed the set 25-12.
SET 4
CSUNÂ opened the final set claiming six of the first nine points. A Brianna Johnson kill opened up a 10-6 Matador lead and a Titan setting error pushed the lead to 12-7. Fullerton got as close as three before an Owens kill pushed the lead back to five at 15-10. Still leading by five at 20-15, CSUNÂ closed the match on a 5-2 run to take the set 25-17 and the match 3-1.Â
