Matadors Top SIUE 85-79 at Las Vegas Classic
12/22/2018 1:37:00 PM | Men's Basketball
LAS VEGAS, Nev.---Three Matadors scored in double figures as CSUN Men's Basketball (4-8) beat SIUE 85-79 on Saturday morning at the Las Vegas Classic. Sophomore Terrell Gomez led all scorers with 22 points as he hit five 3-pointers while freshman Lamine Diane posted his sixth double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Rodney Henderson Jr. added 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting. The Matadors led for the entire second half and held off a late Cougars run to pick up the win.
"I liked how we played for the most part," said head coach Mark Gottfried. "We turned the ball over a little too much. Outside of a stretch where they really got aggressive and pushed it at us right there and kind of cut our lead down, outside of that period, I thought we improved defensively. We really executed our offense down the stretch and got good shots so we're making progress. It's a good win for our guys. We needed Terrell to make some shots, which he did. Rocket [Henderson Jr.] made a couple, Lamine was great and Kaba gave us good minutes in there."
CSUN shot 54.4 percent for the night including registering a 58.6 clip in the second half. On the slip side, the Matadors held the Cougars to 37.5 percent shooting. The Matadors would go 10-of-17 from the 3-point arc (58.8 percent) while the opposition went 8-for-24 (33.3 percent). On the glass, SIUE out-rebounded CSUN 42-38 but the Matadors held a 15-4 advantage in second-chance points.
After a pair of early turnovers, CSUN fell behind 6-0 in the early moments of the game. The Matadors would respond with an 8-1 run to take their first lead on a 3-pointer from Rodney Henderson Jr. Following five-straight points from Diane, Henderson Jr. hit the bottom of the net again from long range to give CSUN its biggest lead at 25-16.
CSUN took a 29-22 lead at the 6:33 mark before going scoreless for over four minutes. The lead was trimmed down to one until Diane ended the drought with a 3-pointer from the corner. Elijah Harkless knocked down a pair of late free throws to give the Matadors a 36-32 edge at the half.
The Matadors created some breathing room in the early minutes of the second half as they executed a 12-0 run. Gomez scored eight points during the stretch including two 3-pointers that put CSUN ahead 48-34. In the second half, Gomez tallied 20 points and hit 5-of-6 shots from 3-point range.
CSUN turned up its defensive pressure, accumulating six blocks shots in the second half alone. Mahamadou Kaba-Camara picked up three blocks in the game including a pair after halftime. Henderson Jr. swatted a 3-point attempt from Tyreese Williford, leading to a Diane layup that gave CSUN a 65-46 lead at the 9:15 mark.
The tables would turn though as SIUE orchestrated an 11-0 run, cutting the lead to 71-65 at the 3:57 mark. With the lead down to single digits, the Matadors received timely buckets from Henderson Jr. and Cameron Gottfried down the stretch. Gottfried scored off a feed from Brown with under a minute to play and he later hit two free throws to stretch the lead to seven points. Gomez also connected on a pair of free throws with nine seconds left to ice the game for CSUN.
In addition to his double-double, Diane finished with four assists, three blocks and three steals. Brown posted nine points and four assists while Michael Ou chipped in with seven points and five rebounds.
With the win, Gottfried has now won 24-straight games against Ohio Valley Conference teams. The Matadors also collected their first win on a neutral-site court since beating Wright State in 2015.
The Matadors conclude their stay at the Las Vegas Classic on Sunday with a game against Rider at 1:30 p.m.
