Matadors Visit Cal State Fullerton on ESPN3

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball returns to the road for a Saturday night meeting with Cal State Fullerton. Tip off is slated for 6 p.m. and the game will be aired live on ESPN3. An audio only broadcast will also be available on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health with Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister on the call from Titan Gym. The Matadors look to bounce back after a tough loss to UC Riverside 69-62 at The Matadome on Wednesday night. CSUNÂ seemed in control, ahead 42-33 with 13:52 left to play, however the Highlanders had other ideas. UC Riverside went on an 18-0 run over the next 6:06 to take a 51-42 lead. CSUN trimmed the lead to six on three occasions down the stretch but the Highlanders held off the Matadors to earn an important Big West Conference victory.Â
Reggie Theus Jr. scored a career-high 19 points on 9-of-18 shooting to go with three assists and three rebounds. Tavrion Dawson added 17 points with four rebounds and two steals while Terrell Gomez and Lyrik Shreiner each had 11 points. Micheal Warren tied a career high in rebounding with 12 boards.Â
The Matadors' loss to the Highlanders coupled with Cal Poly's defeat to UC Davis on Thursday leaves the Matadors and Mustangs tied for seventh in the Big West standings with 3-9 records. Right behind the two teams, UC Riverside is 2-9 and only one-half games behind the two teams. CSUN currently has the tiebreaker over Cal Poly for the moment as the teams will meet next Thursday in San Luis Obispo while the Highlanders and Matadors split their two-game series this season. The top eight teams in the conference will advance to the Big West Tournament set for March 8-10.Â
After scoring 17 points against UC Riverside, Dawson has improved his career point total to 1,147 points. The CSUN forward is now 12 points away from reaching 13th place on the Matadors' career scoring list, which are currently occupied by the tandem of Calvin Chitwood (2004-08) and George Robnett (1970-74). With 26 more points, he would reach a 12th place tie with CSUN Hall of Famer Markus Carr (1998-02) who finished with 1,173 points in his career.Â
In the Big West, Dawson is sixth in the league in points per game (16.4) and seventh in rebounding (6.5). Gomez continues to lead the Big West in minutes per game (34.0), and he is second in 3-point percentage (47.0) and eighth in assists per game (3.5). Warren is third in the Big West in free throw percentage (84.7) and eighth in rebounds per game (6.3). Also averaging 12.5 points and 2.0 assists, Warren is the only Big West player to average at least 12.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists this season.Â
The Titans lead the all-time series with the Matadors 42-34 after winning two of three meetings last season. CSUN earned 70-65 win at Titan Gym last season but fell to Fullerton 86-78 at The Matadome. The two teams matched up in the opening round of the Big West Tournament in 2017 with the Titans prevailing 81-68. Dawson averaged 11.0 points and 8.0 rebounds against the Titans last season while Warren averaged 12.7 points. The Matadors have won seven of the last 10 meetings including two straight on Fullerton's home floor.
A Closer Look at Cal State Fullerton
Currently fourth in the Big West, Cal State Fullerton (14-9) is 7-4 in Big West play. The Titans have won two-straight games and are coming off a victory at UC Davis last Saturday. Fullerton is 8-3 at Titan Gym this season.Â
Junior Kyle Allman is second in the Big West in scoring with 18.7 points per game to go with 3.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists. Also averaging in double figures, junior Khalil Ahmad is scoring 15.5 points and sophomore Jackson Rowe is posting a team-best 6.7 rebounds with 11.7 points per game. The Titans are tops in the Big West in free throws made per game (17.4), and the team is first in 3-point percentage (38.3) and field goal percentage (48.6) in league play.Â
