Megan Stevens' five RBI day helped lead CSUN past Fresno State 12-2 in the final game of the Mary Nutter Cathedral City Classic Sunday afternoon.
Â
With one out in the top of the third Mackenzie Babbitt led off the CSUN third with an infield single. Savannah Horvath worked out a walk to bring up Kira Cauley. Cauley's grounded out to short, but both runners advanced a base. Megan Stevens doubled down the left field line to plate a pair. Fresno State got out of the inning when Corrin Green grounded out to first.
Â
CSUN threatened in the top of the fourth but stranded two runners on base. Savannah McHellon led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run to left to cut the CSUN lead in half. Horvath opened the CSUN fifth with a double down the left field line. Cauley reached safely on an infield single which allowed Horvath to head to third. Stevens came up and smacked her fourth home run of the season to increase the lead to 5-1.
Â
Green walked prior to Journey Rojas grounding into a 6-4 fielder's choice. Jocelin Soto singled. With two outs, Haileigh Gonzalez doubled to center to create at five-run inning for the Matadors. Fresno State threatened in the bottom of the fifth but would strand runners at the corners.
Â
Horvath and Cauley posted back-to-back walks to open the sixth. Â With one out, Green singled up the middle to drive in Horvath. Rojas followed with a three-run home run for a 11-1 score. CSUN would add one more run later in the inning. Hayleigh Gavin homered to lead off the Fresno State sixth for the final run of the game.
Â
Soto's three hits paced the Matadors. Stevens charted two. Jillian James tossed a complete game six-hitter. She struck out seven and walked four.Â
Â
"This is a nice confidence builder for us," said CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers. "We hit the ball well. JJ threw the ball well and we made some good defensive plays. Megan is a strong hitter and when she gets a piece of it, it goes very far, and it was nice for her to have some payoff today."
Â
The Matadors (6-10) return to field next weekend at the San Diego Classic. CSUN takes on Boston University Friday morning at 11:30 a.m. at the University of San Diego before heading over to San Diego State at 7 p.m.
