CSUN Goes 3-0 At Matador Classic

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN concluded Matador Classic play Saturday morning by defeating Pacific 8-5 to go 3-0 in the tournament.Â
A two-out Journey Rojas RBI single in the top of the first drove in Megan Stevens to give the Matadors a 1-0 lead. Â With one out in the top of the second, Kenedee Jamerson doubled. Mackenzie Babbitt followed with a single to give CSUN runners on the corners.Â
On the first pitch to Savannah Horvath, Babbitt broke for second and successfully stole the base. The throw down ended up in center, allowing Jamerson to score. Horvath singled up the middle to plate Babbitt. Kira Cauley reach on an infield single. Horvath advanced to second and move to third on a Tigers' error. Cauley stole second and again, the throw from Madeline Domingo went into center, allowing Horvath to score and Cauley to advance to third. Cauley would score on a Stevens sacrifice fly.Â
Rojas walked to lead off the third. Raquel Jaime singled her to third. Haileigh Gonzalez's single through the left side drove in Rojas. Bethany Hammer relieved Kenya Lindstrom in the circle to face Jamerson. Hammer walked Jamerson to load the bases. Babbitt struck out to bring up Horvath singled to right to drive in a pair. Cauley grounded out to Hammer. Stevens struck out to end the inning. Â
Four straight Pacific hits off of CSUN reliever Cheyenne Noli with one out in the bottom of the fifth led to the Tigers' first run. With the bases loaded, a Sydney Lahners double cleared the bases to make it an 8-4 game. Rachel Sellers' double was the sixth straight hit of the inning and drove in Lahners. With two outs, Caitlyn Sung walked to give Pacific runners on the corners. Maddison Hopper came up as the tying run before lining out to right to conclude the inning.Â
With one out in the Pacific sixth Talli Shepherd reached on an infield single. Hailey Reed singled to left. Shepherd raced to third as Reed took second on the throw to third. Samantha Owen hit a grounder to Jocelin Soto at third. Soto threw across to first for the second out. Shepherd broke for home. Green, the first baseman, threw home where Gator Rascon tagged her out to complete the double play and the end the inning.Â
Sellers singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Bradi Kooyman singled to bring the tying run up for the second time. Taylor Troost, the third CSUN pitcher of the day, got Pacific pinch hitter Starr Vang to ground into a double play to end the game.Â
Horvath was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Jamerson gave up one hit in three innings of work to start the game. She added a base hit as well. Sellers was 3-for-4 as Pacific outhit CSUN 12-10.
"When you have a lead, you hope that are able to increase it," said CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers. "I thought we might have settled in too much there. It was a testament to Pacific that they came back. It was nice to see us play good defense at the end and get the win."
The Matadors (15-22) open Big West Conference play next weekend when CSUN welcomes UC Davis to Matador Diamond.Â
