CSUN Defeats UC Davis 4-3 In Big West Opener

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Megan Stevens hit a three-run home run and scored what proved to be the insurance run as CSUN defeated UC Davis 4-3 in the Big West Softball opener Friday afternoon.

Stevens hit her seventh home run of the year in the bottom of the first put the Matadors into the lead. The first two UC Davis batters reached base in the top of the third before Jillian James, the CSUN starter, got Aly Gomonet to fly out to center. Isabella Leon singled up the middle to plate a run. Ashley Lotszynski's sacrifice fly drove in the second Aggie run. Riley Siegel singled to center which advanced Leon to third. Siegel took second on the throw. Maddie Rojas grounded out to second to end the inning.

With one out in the fourth, Frankie Mendoza was hit by a James' pitch. Alex Sotomayor hit a shot to Jocelin Soto at third. Soto grabbed the ball and was able to start a 5-4-3 double play to conclude the frame.

Stevens was hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Raquel Jaime successfully sacrificed Stevens to second. Journey Rojas singled up the middle to plate Stevens to make it 4-2.

Haileigh Gonzalez led off the CSUN sixth with a double. Kenedee Jamerson was able to advance Gonzalez to third with a ground out to second. Mackenzie Babbitt grounded out to third but could not drive in Gonzalez. Savannah Horvath walked and stole second. Kira Cauley walked to load the bases. Stevens came to bat. With the count 1-2, A Stevens' shot to left was caught at the warning track by Caroline Figueroa for the final out.

James was called for an illegal pitch as Mendoza lined out to third to begin the seventh. This returned Mendoza to the plate where she doubled with the count 3-1. Sotomayor grounded out to short. Alyse Rojas, the UCD leadoff hitter, singled up the middle to score Mendoza. Rojas took second as the throw came home. Figueroa fouled out. Leon lined out to center to end the game.

The Aggies outhit the Matadors 6-5 with Alyse Rojas going 2-for-2. Journey Rojas was 2-for-2 for the Matadors. James struck out three and walked two. Kibby worked around four walks for the Aggies.
