Matadors Top Cal Poly in Big West Opener
3/29/2018 6:55:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (11-14, 1-0 BWC) scored four times in the sixth and added another in the seventh to rally past Cal Poly for a 5-3 victory in both teams' Big West opener on Thursday afternoon at Matador Field. Trevor Casanova collected three hits including a double while Kevin Riley finished with two hits and an RBI. Jayson Newman earned his first career victory by tossing 2.2 shutout innings out of the bullpen to go with four strikeouts. The Matadors notched their first win to start Big West Conference play since 2013.
"[Cal Poly does] a good job at the plate. Great takes, and they find a way to manufacture runs. I thought we did a nice job of throwing strikes for the most part," said head coach Greg Moore. "We had a rocky [fourth] inning that Jayson Newman steadied but beyond that we did a good job of getting ahead and then finishing late in that game.
"The 90 by Brandon Bohning was the key there [in the sixth]," added Moore about his team's four run inning. "He hits one in the ground and goes hard through the base. That's the key to that inning, it usually is. Hitters that run hard out of the box get above baseballs. That discipline usually lines up."
Making his first start this season, Isaiah Nunez had to work around a tough first inning on Thursday. Nunez allowed an infield single to Alex McKenna to lead off the game, then he gave up a well-placed bunt single to Kyle Marinconz. Bradlee Beesley followed with another bunt but Nunez was unable to make a play after losing his footing while fielding the ball. Facing a bases loaded and nobody out jam, Nunez forced Nick Meyer to hit into a fielder's choice that scored a run. Nunez would sit down the next two batters in order to prevent any further damage.
Cal Poly starter Jarred Zill silenced the Matador bats through five innings of work. CSUN threatened in the second after Nolan Bumstead singled and Brandon Bohning walked but Zill struck out the next two batters. Zill also pitched around a two-out hit in the third and a one-out single in the fifth.
After the first inning, Nunez stranded two more runners in the second inning and another in the third. An inning later, the Mustangs appeared they would score again following two-straight singles to start the frame. Nunez retired the next batter before Newman took over on the mound. Newman walked McKenna to load the bases, however he struck out Marinconz and sat down Beesley on a lineout.
Newman kept the Mustangs off balance over the fifth and sixth innings. Striking out three batters over the two frames, Newman kept the Matadors within striking distance entering the sixth.
CSUN finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth, chalking up four runs on five hits. Casanova doubled to kick off the frame then Albee Weiss legged out an infield single to short. After Justin Toerner moved both runners up on a sacrifice bunt, Bumstead loaded the bases on a single. Bohning would follow with chopper over the mound that he beat out at first base to tie the game. Moments later, Riley Conlan forced in another run on a walk and RIley brought home a third run on a sacrifice fly. Alvaro Rubalcaba capped off the frame with an RBI single after a 10-pitch at bat to put CSUN on top 4-1.
The Mustangs trimmed the Matador lead to two on an RBI double from Beesley in the seventh but CSUN capitalized on a Cal Poly miscue to score in its half of the frame. With Joey Cooper at first base, Casanova laced a single to right field that Beesley misplayed. Cooper would come around from first base on the error for the Matadors' fifth run.
Dylan Doherty brought the Mustangs closer on a two-out RBI double in the eighth. Tei Vanderford prevented any further runs from scoring by striking out McKenna for the third out. Cassius Hamm took over on the mound in the ninth and tossed a 1-2-3 inning to earn his second save of the season.
Casanova recorded his team-leading 12th multiple-hit performance of the season including his sixth game where he has tallied at least three hits. Bumstead also collected his ninth multiple-hit game of the year.
The Matadors look to clinch the series from Cal Poly on Friday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. An audio only broadcast will be available on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health with Ross Porter on the call.
