CSUN Falls 8-3 To Oregon State; Texas Tech Game Suspended Due To Darkness
3/9/2018 7:08:00 PM | Softball
Hosting the CSUN Tournament this weekend, the Matadors dropped an 8-3 decision to Oregon State before having game two of the tournament against Texas Tech suspended due to darkness during Friday's opening day of play.
Â
CSUN-OREGON STATE
The Beavers took advantage of being hit twice, a walk, and two CSUN errors to score three runs in the top of the second. Savannah Horvath's eighth home run of the year, a two-run blast in the bottom of the second, cut the Oregon State lead to one.
Â
The Matadors' third error of the game in the top of the third, along with two more walks helped the Beavers to a second three-run rally. Oregon State added a run in the fourth and a run in the seventh. A Megan Stevens RBI single in the seventh scored Kira Cauley to complete the scoring.
Â
Oregon State managed only six hits against three CSUN pitchers. Only three of the eight OSU runs were earned as the Beavers worked out six walks and had batters hit by pitches three times. Five different Matadors recorded a hit.
Â
CSUN-TEXAS TECH
CSUN and Texas Tech's game was suspended by darkness after 6.5 innings with the Red Raiders. The game will be likely resumed in between the game on Sunday that Texas Tech has completed against Oregon State and prior to the start of CSUN's game against Seattle U. A final time for the resumption will be made on Saturday.
Â
The Red Raiders took a 1-0 lead after a half inning before Stevens drove in Horvath and the Matadors added an unearned run in the bottom of the first. Texas Tech scored a run in the second and in the third before Ty Cueva drove in a run in the bottom of the third.
Â
Cauley drove in two runs in the fourth when her single plated Horvath and Mackenzie Babbitt. Breanna Russell's two-RBI double keyed a three-run Texas Tech sixth. Karli Hamilton's two-run home run highlighted the Red Raiders' three-run rally in the seventh. Â It was at this point that the game was suspended.
Â
Cauley was 3-for-4 prior the suspension for CSUN. Hamilton and Russell both had two hits for Texas Tech in 6.5 innings of work.
"We are hitting the ball well and will continue to work on getting better," said CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers.
Â
In other tournament action on Friday, Oregon State defeated Seattle U 5-0 while Texas Tech defeated the Redhawks 6-2. The CSUN Tournament resumes Saturday at 8 a.m. when Oregon State faces Seattle U at 8 a.m. Oregon State takes on Texas Tech at 10:30 a.m. before CSUN hosts Texas Tech at 1 p.m.
