CSUN Wins Pitcher's Duel, Evens Series with Long Beach State
4/14/2018 4:52:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (17-17, 5-3 BWC) edged Long Beach State 2-1 to even the teams' weekend series on Saturday afternoon at Matador Field. Junior Isaiah Nunez worked a season-high 6.2 innings, scattering eight hits and allowing just one run. Justin Toerner and Trevor Casanova each piled up two hits while Kevin Riley hit a solo home run in the second inning, which turned out to be the deciding run on the day.
"I'm happy we played well today. Isaiah Nunez got the start, he went deep into that game and it opened us up to take good care of our bullpen," said head coach Greg Moore. "Our bullpen did a nice job. Hayden Shenefield came in and did what he wanted to do. He talked his way back in to the game in the ninth inning and he got it done. I like to see guys want the ball, take the ball and do their job."
Making just his third start of the season, Nunez kept the Dirtbag hitters off balanced throughout most of his time on the mound. Nunez retired 12 of the first 14 batters he faced in the game. In the third, after committing a throwing error that put a base runner at second base, he retired Jarren Duran on a flyout to get out of danger. Throughout the first four innings, Nunez only allowed one base runner to reach second base.Â
Meanwhile, the Matadors jumped on Dirtbag starter Clayton Andrews in the second inning. Toerner opened the inning with a triple down the right field line. Two batters later, Toerner touched home plate on a Andrews wild pitch. Later in the frame, Riley stepped to the plate and sent a long home run way over the left field wall to put the Matadors ahead 2-0.Â
Andrews settled down after the second and kept the Matadors off the scoreboard the rest of the way. CSUN threatened to score in the fourth inning as Nolan Bumstead and Riley Conlan reached on back-to-back two-out singles but Andrews struck out Riley to end the threat. Andrews scatted four hits after the Riley single over his last four innings of work as he went six innings and struck out eight batters.Â
Trying to protect a narrow lead, Nunez ran into trouble in the fifth. Joey Sanchez began the inning with leadoff single then Nunez hit Brooks Stotler with a pitch. Shaq Robinson would reach base as well on a bunt single to load the bases with nobody out.
In perhaps the key play of the fifth, Santino Rivera hit a groundball on the right side to Brandon Bohning. The second baseman attempted to turn a double play and was able to get the first out at second but Alvaro Rubalcaba's relay was late to first. However, a runner's interference was called at second base, resulting on two outs on the play. The two remaining base runners also had to return to their original base. Nunez eventually retired Duran for the third out of the inning, stranding three runners on the base paths.Â
In the seventh, the Dirtbags trimmed the CSUN lead to 2-1 on an RBI groundout from Clayton Andrews. Nunez was able to record the first two outs but was lifted from the game with runners at the corners. Hayden Shenefield entered the fray and dispatched of Chris Jimenez for the third out.Â
Working a clean eighth inning, Shenefield hit the first batter to start the ninth. After a mound visit, Shenefield stayed in the game and was able to escape the jam. The right hander retired the next three batters in order all on groundouts as he stranded the tying run at third base to end the game. Tossing 2.1 shutout innings in relief, Shenfield earned his first save of the season.Â
Casanova tallied his team-leading 16th multiple-hit game of the year while Toerner picked up his eighth. Toerner also moved into a fifth-place tie with Jerry Libman (1962-64) on the Matadors' career triples list with his 12th on Saturday.Â
The Matadors and Dirtbags battle in the rubber game on Sunday afternoon with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health with Ross Porter on the call. Coverage will start at 12:45 p.m.Â
