Matadors Drop Series Finale to Long Beach State

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (17-18, 5-4 BWC) suffered a 3-2 loss to Long Beach State in a Big West Conference contest on Sunday afternoon at Matador Field. Nolan Bumstead tied a career high with three hits and Kevin Riley homered for the second-straight game en route to finishing with two hits and two RBI. Three Matador pitchers saw action on the day as Matt Acosta worked three innings, allowing a run while Tei Vanderford worked two shutout innings to go with three strikeouts.Â
The rubber match between the two teams would come down to pitching for the second consecutive day. The Matadors were able to hold up two early runs to claim Saturday's contest, 2-1, but the Dirtbags countered with a narrow win on Sunday behind quality work from their bullpen and a clutch hit in the seventh inning.Â
The second inning proved to be another productive frame for the Matadors as they took the lead on one swing of the bat. After Bumstead was hit by a pitch, Riley belted a two-run home run to deep left field to put CSUN ahead 2-0. Riley also homered in Saturday's contest in the second inning, which at the time gave CSUN a two-run lead.Â
Acosta pitched effectively in the early going, retiring the first seven batters of the game. However, the Dirtbags threated in the third inning after Acosta issued a one-out walk to Shaq Robinson and a single to Satinto Rivera that put runners at the corners. Clayton Andrews delivered with a groundball to the right side that scored Robinson to cut the CSUN lead to 2-1. Acosta escaped further trouble by setting down Brooks Stotler.Â
Cassius Hamm entered out of the bullpen in the fourth and was greeted unkindly with a leadoff triple from Jarren Duran. Three batters later, Tristan Mercadel brought home the tying run with a grounder to Hamm.Â
Hamm pitched around a two-out hit in the fifth and a leadoff single in the sixth. The Dirtbags though would come through with a timely hit in the seventh to pull ahead.Â
Robinson reached on a one-out infield single in the seventh inning, and he later stole second base. Rivera advanced the runner to third base on a groundout before Andrews came through with an RBI single to left field to move his team in front.Â
Meanwhile, the Matadors were held off the scoreboard after the Riley home run in the second inning. Matador batters reached base in seven of nine innings on Sunday but CSUN was turned away in six of those frames.Â
In the sixth, Trevor Casanova's single to center field was wiped away on a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Albee Weiss. Justin Toerner and Bumstead each followed with singles before Eli Villalobos retired Riley Conlan to end the frame.Â
The combination of Adam Seminaris and Villalobos combined to toss 4.2 shutout innings out of the bullpen, scattering five CSUN hits.Â
The Matadors forged one last rally in the bottom of the ninth against closer Chris Rivera. Bumstead roped a leadoff double to left field before being lifted from the game in favor of pinch runner Kyle Barret. Conlan moved the runner up a base on a groundout to the right side for the first out of the inning. Riley stepped to the plate next and sent a flyball to shallow right center field.Â
Andrews made the catch and quickly fired home. Barret initially tried to tag from third base but immediately put on the brakes halfway up the line as Andrews' throw was on time to the plate. Catcher Chris Jimenez quickly fired to third base where Robinson applied a tag on a retreating Barret for the final out of the game.Â
Bumstead collected his 11th career three-hit game as well as his third this season. The third baseman has 11 multiple-hit games on the year, which are second-best on the team.Â
The Matadors return to non-conference action on Tuesday as they travel to San Diego State. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.Â
