UC Irvine Rallies to Defeat CSUN 5-4
4/21/2018 4:25:00 PM | Baseball
Nunez was dominant at the outset, shutting out the Anteaters through five innings. The left hander retired 15 of the first 17 batters of the game including 12 in a row at one point. Nunez gave up his first hit to Christian Koss with two outs in the fifth inning but he rebounded nicely by forcing Konnor Zickefoose on a popup.Â
On the flip side, the Matadors were held without a hit by Taylor Rashi through the first three innings before Casanova singled to right field in the fourth. Justin Toerner put the Matadors on the scoreboard in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly, plating Joey Cooper.Â
CSUN added to its lead in the fifth inning as Riley led off the frame with a blast over the left field wall. Riley Conlan followed with a double before Brandon Bohning worked a walk to put two runners on base. After Alvaro Rubalcaba sacrificed both runners up a base, Cooper delivered with a sacrifice fly to put the Matadors ahead 3-0.Â
Cruising through the first five innings, Nunez ran into trouble in the sixth. Four of the first five Anteater batters reached on singles including Ryan Fitzpatrick who hit an RBI single. Hayden Shenefield came out of the bullpen but threw a wild pitch that scored another run. Cole Krueter would later even the game at 3-3 on a sacrifice fly to center field. However, Shenefield escaped further trouble by retiring the next batter, stranding two runners on base.Â
After CSUN was turned away in the sixth, the Matadors reclaimed the lead in the seventh. Rubalcaba began the frame with a double into the gap in right center field then Cooper singled through the right side. Casanova would come through with an RBI on a fielder's choice to put CSUN back on top.Â
Out of the bullpen, Jayson Newman worked a clean seventh inning and Cassius Hamm tossed a shutout eighth as the Matadors led 4-3 going to the ninth inning.
Hamm, who retired three of four batters in the eighth, served up a leadoff triple to Krueter to deep center field. On the play, Toerner nearly made a circus catch but the ball hit off his glove before he rammed into the center field wall. Koss followed with a sacrifice fly on the very next pitch to tie the game once more at 4-4. Hamm set down the next batter but the Anteaters would surge into the lead after a solo home run from Matt Reitano.Â
UCI closer Jordan Bocko entered the game in the ninth and pitched a 1-2-3 inning to nail down the save for his team.Â
Riley notched his 10th multiple-hit game of the year while Casanova extended his hitting streak to nine straight. Casanova also threw out his 15th base runner of the season in the eighth inning.Â
The Matadors and Anteaters wrap up their three-game series on Sunday afternoon with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health with Ross Porter on the call.Â
