INDIAN WELLS, Calif.—Cal State Fullerton, the third seed, defeated CSUN, the sixth seed, 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the Big West Women's Tennis Tournament Friday afternoon.
The first match to go in the books was at No. 1 doubles where Sarah Nuno and Karla Portalatin defeated Monika Van de Vondel and Skyla Alcon 6-2. The Matadors' Alicia Dinkelmeyer and Emma Roenholt evened the dual when the CSUN duo defeated Luxizi Meng and Masako Makiba in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-2).Â
Cal State Fullerton (19-5) would take the doubles point as Jadie Acidera and Genevieve Zeidan defeated Kiryang Kim and Mari Taslagyan in a tiebreaker 7-6 (13-11).Â
Zeidan defeated Van de Vondel in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 1 singles before Meng defeated Roenholt 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 to put Cal State Fullerton up 3-0. The Titans would clinch the dual at No. 3 when Portalatin overcame dropping the first set to Alcon 6-3 to win the next two sets by a 6-1, 6-1 count. The Matadors finished the season with a 7-12 dual record.Â
"We had our opportunities with multiple points for the doubles point," said CSUN head coach Gary Victor. "We are proud of how they fought through injuries, family adversities and so much more. Â This year had more challenges than any other, yet the team fought for everything and came away as the closest group I've ever seen. This was a special group of seniors."
