GAME 1
UC Santa Barbara outslugged CSUN 9-5 to begin the series. A two-out first inning rally for the Gauchos resulted in UCSB loading the bases for Samantha Lujan. Lujan appeared to have struck out on a 3-2 count, but CSUN pitcher Jillian James was called for her third illegal pitch of the inning and resulted in a walk that allowed a run to score. Maci Fines singled up the middle to drive in two runs. Alyssa Lazatin lined out to end the inning.
Â
Jessica Alexander was hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom of the first. Savannah Horvath's 14th home run of the season cut the Gauchos' advantage to 3-2. The Gauchos struck again with two outs in the second. Sierra Altmeyer's second double of the game plated Sammy Fabian to push lead back to two. Rayna Cohen singled up the middle to drive in two more for UC Santa Barbara. Lujan struck out looking for the final out.
Â
Fines led off the third with a double. Melanie Menor attempted to sacrifice Fines to third. Alexander, the CSUN third baseman, elected to try and get the lead runner at third. The attempt failed as both runners reached safely. Kenedee Jamerson, who relieved James in the second, struck out out Lazatin. Genesis Ramirez was hit by a Jamerson 2-2 pitch to load the bases. Fabian hit a grounder to Alexander who threw home to get the force out. Alyssa Diaz grounded out to first to end the inning.
Â
Alexander singled with one out in the bottom of the third. Horvath grounded into a 5-4 fielder's choice. Journey Rojas worked out a four-pitch walk which brought Megan Stevens to the plate. Stevens hit a fly ball into the left center game that was tracked down by Cohen for the final out of the frame.
Â
A one-out RBI triple from Juliana Martinez scored Haileigh Gonzalez to cut the UCSB lead in half. Kira Cauley legged out a blooper into center from a single into a double on which Martinez scored. Alexander reached on an infield single to put CSUN runners on the corners. Horvath was intentionally walked by Gaucho starter Felisha Noriega. With the bases loaded, Rojas hit a grounder to Fines at third. She went the short way and just tagged the bases prior to Alexander reaching the base to get the final out of the inning.
Â
Fines beat out a bunt single to lead off the UC Santa Barbara fifth. A CSUN error on the play, allowed her to reach third. Menor reached on an error which allowed Fines to score. Alexander made a diving catch of a Lazatin sac bunt attempt. Ramirez, the next batter, homered to left for a 9-4 score. Stevens capped off the scoring with her 10th home run of the year, a solo shot, with one out in the bottom of the seventh.
Â
Altmeyer was 3-for-4 with three doubles to pace UC Santa Barbara. Â Fines was 3-for-3 with two RBI. Â Cohen was 2-for-2 with two runs batted in for the Gauchos. Alexander had two of the seven CSUN hits (2-for-4). Horvath's home run was her 49th career blast and she is now four away from tying the Big West record for career homers. Long Beach State's Darian Tautalafua who hit 53 for the 49ers from 2013-16.

GAME 2
Behind Noli's efforts, the Matadors defeated the Gauchos 8-1 in the nightcap. Â Alexander's two-run home run with one out in the bottom of the first put the Matadors into the lead for the first time on the day. Horvath was hit by a pitch which chased UCSB starter Veronika Gulvin. Noriega relieved Gulvin and gave up a Stevens single. Rojas flew out to left, but the ball was deep enough to advance Horvath. Jaymi Steward loaded the bases when she beat out an infield single.
Â
Horvath scored the third CSUN run on a Lujan passed ball. Raquel Jaime attempted a suicide squeeze. Lujan dropped the ball, allowing Stevens to score. Jaime's bunt single allowed Steward to score. Jaime took second on a UCSB error. Pudi Hernandez's bunt single advanced Jaime to third. Hernandez stole second. Both runners would be stranded as Martinez fouled out to left while Mackenzie Babbitt, the leadoff hitter, batting for the second time in the inning grounded out.
Â
A pair of UC Santa Barbara errors with one out in the bottom of the fifth brought Jaime to the plate with one out. With two outs, the Matadors loaded the bases. Martinez was hit by a pitch to bring in a run. Babbitt grounded out to first with the bases loaded to keep the game 6-0.
Â
With one out in the sixth, the Gauchos put runners on first and second with singles. A CSUN error allowed a run to score and keep runners on first and second. Altmeyer flew out to right as Fabian took third. Cohen grounded out to short to wrap up matters.
Â
Horvath singled with one out in the bottom of the sixth. She stole second and moved to third on an error. Stevens smacked a two-run home run, her 11th of the season to make it 8-1. The Gauchos recorded two hits with two outs to mount a threat in the seventh. Ramirez
Â
Noli needed 98 pitches to record her second career complete game. Saturday marked her first start of the season after being slowed by injury. The run she allowed was unearned. The 5-9 Chandler, Ariz. native got 12 ground ball outs as she faced seven above the minimum. Stevens and Hernandez both had two hits for the Matadors.
Â
"Our players did a good job of rebounding after the first game," said CSUN head coach Tiaria Flowers. "We made contact in the first game, but it wasn't paying off for us. We did a good job of setting the tone and coming out aggressive in game two. Cheyenne has some good stuff. The defense played well behind her and she was able to settle in."
Â
The Matadors (19-32, 4-10 BWC) and UC Santa Barbara (18-29, 5-9 BWC) conclude the series Sunday afternoon. Brandon Marcus' pregame show on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health begins at 12:50 p.m. First pitch is 1 p.m.
