Babbitt & Alexander Help Send CSUN Past UCSB 13-5

The Gauchos opened the first with back-to-back Maci Fines and Sammy Fabian singles. Genesis Ramirez attempted to sacrifice the runners up a base. Megan Stevens, the CSUN pitcher, committed a throwing error to allow each runner to reach. A second error on the play, committed by Haileigh Gonzalez, allowed Fines to score. Sierra Altmeyer's single drove in Fabian.

With one out, Alyssa Lazatin was hit by a Stevens pitch to load the bases. Jillian James relieved Stevens to face Samantha Lujan. Lujan earned a walk on a 3-2 count when James was called for an illegal pitch. As a result, UCSB scored their third run. With the bases loaded, Melanie Menor grounded into a 6-2 fielder's choice. Lena Mayer struck out to compete the inning.

Babbitt opened the CSUN first with a bunt single. Alexander singled down the left field line to bring up Savannah Horvath. Horvath was hit by a 3-1 Emily Schuttish pitch to load the bases. Stevens, who was sixth in Division I in sac flies coming into the game, recorded her sixth of the year, to plate Babbitt. Journey Rojas battled back from being down 0-2 in the count to hit a ball deep enough to center for a sacrifice fly and score Alexander.

Haileigh Gonzalez singled to left center to advance Horvath to third. Raquel Jaime was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jaymi Steward doubled to right center to drive in Rojas and Gonzales to give CSUN a 4-3 lead. Felisha Noriega relieved Schuttish. Her first batter was Julianna Martinez who grounded out to second to conclude the inning.

Babbitt led off the CSUN second by reaching on a two-base Noriega throwing error. Babbitt came around to score on an Alexander single. Alexander and Horvath completed a double steal. This paid off as a Noriega wild pitch allowed Alexander to score and push Horvath to third. Stevens doubled down the left field line to drive in Horvath. Rojas grounded out to second which allowed Stevens to reach third. Gonzalez's grounder to first was fielded by Altmeyer who threw home to retire Stevens. Jaime grounded out to second for the final out.

Altmeyer appeared to have flied out to right to begin the UCSB third. James was called for her third illegal pitch of the game. With renewed life, Altmeyer homered on the very next pitch, her sixth of the season, to cut into the CSUN lead.

Babbitt tripled with two outs in the bottom of the third. Alexander's third hit of the game, a double to center, drove in Babbitt for an 8-4 score. Horvath was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game to keep the CSUN inning going. Schuttish's second wild pitch of the game allowed Alexander and pinch-runner Alyssa Vazquez to advance.

Stevens walked on four pitches to load the bases. Mayer, who started the game as the designated player, came on in relief. Rojas was her first batter. Mayer's first pitch went to the backstop, allowing Alexander to score. Rojas doubled to left center which allowed Vazquez and Stevens to score and increase the advantage to 11-4. Gonzalez struck out to end the inning.
With one out in the top of the fourth, Mayer walked. With two outs, the third CSUN error of the game and James' illegal pitch kept the UCSB fourth alive. Ramirez reach an infield single. Horvath's throw on the play went wide, allowing a run to score. Altmeyer was intentionally walked to load the bases which brought up Rayna Cohen who popped out to third to wrap up the inning.

Jaime walked to get the CSUN fourth underway. With one out, Martinez walked which chased Mayer in favor of Veronika Gulvin. Babbitt put down a successful sacrifice bunt to advance both runners into scoring position. Alexander tallied the third walk of the inning to load the bases. Horvath flew out to center to send the game to the fifth.

Stevens reached on an error to start the Matadors' fifth. Rojas singled down the right field line and took second on a throw that was an attempt to get Stevens at third. Gonzalez ended the game with a two-RBI double that invoked the eight-run mercy rule.

"We did a good job after giving up a couple of runs in the first inning," said CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers. "It was a little bit of offense, defense, and communication that helped us bounce back after a rough start."

Alexander went 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Babbitt was 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Rojas was 2-for-3 with three RBI while Gonzalez was 2-for-4. Altmeyer was 2-for-2 with two RBI for the Gauchos (18-30, 5-10 BWC).

"Mack has the speed and showed the power today with a double off the wall," Flowers said. "Alexander is becoming more and more confident every day."

The Matadors (20-33, 5-10 BWC) travel to Hawai'i (21-23, 5-10 BWC) for a three- game series beginning next Friday. First pitch is set for 9 p.m. PDT.
