RIVERSIDE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (13-16, 2-2 BWC) took a one-run lead into the eighth inning but UC Riverside scored five runs in the frame to hand the Matadors a 6-4 defeat on Friday evening at the Riverside Sports Complex. Riley Conlan reached base four times and finished 3-for-3 at the plate while Joey Cooper racked up two hits, two runs scored, two RBI and a home run. Receiving a no decision, Walker Armstrong worked five innings, allowing one run on five hits to go with two strikeouts.Â
The Matadors wasted little time lighting up the scoreboard on Friday, scoring a run in the top of the first. Cooper led off the game with a double into the gap in right center field. CSUN would then manufacture a run with a pair of groundouts as Albee Weiss brought in Cooper with a grounder to short.Â
CSUN added to its lead in the fourth behind a two-out hit from Kevin Riley. Nolan Bumstead kept the inning alive on a two-out walk, and Conlan followed with a single to center field. Riley stepped to the plate next and rifled a single into right center to plate Bumstead and give the Matadors a 2-0 advantage.Â
Armstrong gave the Highlanders fits throughout his five innings of work. The right hander retired the first five batters in the game before running into a bit of trouble in the third. Yeager Taylor doubled to kick off the third but Armstrong got out of trouble later in the frame on a 4-6 double play off a liner from Dylan Orick.Â
In the fourth, Armstrong stranded a runner at third base before finally giving up his first run in the fifth. The inning started off well for Armstrong as the first two Highlander batters were retired in order. Taylor would keep the inning alive with a single before Nathan Webb smacked an RBI double down the left field line to trim the Matador lead to 2-1.Â
Cassius Hamm relieved Armstrong in the sixth and quickly went to work on the mound. Hamm set down the Highlanders in order in the sixth on 10 pitches, and he escaped trouble in the seventh by striking out Webb with two runners in scoring position to end the seventh.Â
Trailing all game long, the Highlanders finally broke through in the eighth. After Orick hit a leadoff single, Colby Schultz tied the game on an RBI double to center field. Anthony Lepre then gave the Highlanders their first lead on an RBI triple into the gap in right center. Blake Schriever entered the fray and struck out the next batter before intentionally walking Connor Cannon. Matt Hardy then broke open the game with a two-run triple to push the lead to three. UCR added its fifth-run of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Cody Sporrer to push the lead to 6-2.Â
The Matadors left nine runners on base in the contest including two in the fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth innings. Down by four heading to the ninth, CSUN forged ahead and quickly cut the deficit in half.  Alvaro Rubalcaba reached base safely to start the frame on a error by Schultz. Cooper came to the plate next and belted a two-run homer to right. The Matadors though would not get any closer as the next three batters were retired in order to end the game.Â
Cooper's home run in the ninth was his fifth of the season. He has now homered in three of the last six games including in two of four Big West games. With his three hits on Friday, Conlan has posted back-to-back three-hit games for the first time in his CSUN career. Cooper is now second on the Matadors in multiple-RBI games this season with eight.
The Matadors continue their three-game series with the Highlanders on Saturday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.Â
