CSUN Track Turns In Top 5 Performances At Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif.—The CSUN men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational Saturday. The Matadors registered two wins and several top five finishes during the meet.
Women's Recap
Brandy Williams led a 1-2 finish in the shot put as she won the event with a toss of 49-8 1/2. Jasmine Pharms was runner-up with a 48-10 3/4 performance.
Sydney Berry won the triple jump (39-10) while Ty Wallace came up with a fourth-place finish (37-8) in the event.
Sydney Mosley and De'Andreah Young both posted top five finishes in the 100m hurdles. Mosley was third in a time of :14.25 while Young came in fifth with a time of :14.41. Samantha Michell and Taranique Alexander rounded out the top 10 for CSUN. Michell was ninth (:14.60) while Alexander placed 10th (:14.73).
Michell would later post a third-place finish in the 400m hurdles (1:01.94). Mosley would place 10th in the 100m (:12.25) later in the meet.
Gardenia Centanaro went 12-1 1/2 in the pole vault to record a third-place performance. Beth Rossi would place 10th (11-1 3/4) in the pole vault.
Jasmine Vasquez placed eighth in the 5000m (18:00.55).
Men's Recap
CSUN went 2-3 in the 110m hurdles. Joshua Turner was second by running :14.51 while Ben Hibbert was third as he came home in a time of :14.58. Hibbert later finished 10th (:10.92) in the 100m.
Michael Merchan finished second in the 5000m (14:52.06). Matthew Arnold was third in the triple jump (47-1 3/4) while Joshua Turner finished fifth in the event (46-2 1/2).
T'Jari Packard placed fourth in the 200m by running a time of :21.42 while Parker Caston Jr earned a ninth-place showing in the race (:21.77). Hibbert ran his third individual event of the day and finished 11th in the 200m (:22.09).
Daniel Swarbrick placed second in the hammer throw (193-0) and was fourth (176-2) in the discus. Armon Hunter (171-6) was fifth in the discus.
Manuel Vargas was fifth in the 5000m (15:08.68). Charlie Nettle finished ninth in the 3000m steeplechase (9:44.74). James Silva came in 10th in the 5000m (15:23.32)
"Today's competition serves as a key stepping stone for our teams as we prepare for the Big West Outdoor Championship," said CSUN interim head coach Lawrence Johnson. "We added a few more Big West qualifiers and that's going to be important in the future."
The Matadors are scheduled to compete in the UC San Diego Triton Invitational next weekend. The two-day competition begins on Apr. 13.
