Matadors Power Past Fresno State 15-2
4/10/2018 10:16:00 PM | Baseball
The Matadors stranded four base runners through the first two innings including leaving the bases loaded in the first, but things would quickly turn around starting in the third. After Trevor Casanova walked and Weiss singled to start the frame, both base runners moved up on a wild pitch. Justin Toerner followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Matadors on the scoreboard. Three batters later, Bohning stepped to the plate and stroked a two-run triple into the gap in left. Ben Martz capped off the inning with another extra base hit, a double, that put CSUN ahead 4-0.Â
Three more runs came in an inning later behind a key two-out hit. With a runner at second base, Toerner and Bumstead worked two-out walks to load the bases. Conlan would rifle a 1-0 pitch into left center field, plating three runs to extend the lead to seven runs.Â
Far from done, the Matadors broke open the game in the fifth inning. Three of the first four Matadors reached base safely to start the inning to load the bases with one out. From there, the next four Matadors compiled hits to extend the lead to double-digits. Casanova, Weiss and Toerner each picked up RBI singles before Bumstead delivered the big blow, a three-run double, that made it a 13-0 game.Â
As impressive as its offense was on Tuesday, the CSUNÂ pitching staff was strong throughout the night as well. Andrew Weston made his third-straight Tuesday start and pitched effectively in his three innings of work.
Weston walked and hit a batter in the first inning but the tandem of Casanova and Alvaro Rubalcaba teamed up to tag out Carter Bins on a run down at the plate. In the second, Weston induced a timely a 4-3 double play to end the frame, and he stranded three runners on base in the third by fanning Bins for the final out. Newman entered the game in the fourth and retired five of the six batters he faced in his two innings on the mound.Â
The Bulldogs finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh. Wesley Moore, who struck out two in a scoreless sixth, surrendered two runs in the frame. Eddie Pena notched his team's first RBI with a double and two batters later, Jeremiah Burks brought home another run on a fielder's choice. Cayce Rocco would end the Bulldog rally by striking out JT Arruda.Â
Rocco hurled a scoreless eighth inning, striking out the side in the frame, and Quint Robinson worked a clean bottom of the ninth. As a staff, the Matadors tied a season high with 12 strikeouts.Â
CSUN extended its lead to 15-2 in the top of the eighth. Off the bench, Kevin Riley picked up a double and Alex Hull cashed in on a RBI triple. Michael Russo capped off the Matadors' scoring for the night with a sacrifice fly, scoring Hull.Â
The Matadors have now scored in double digits eight times this season, winning each game. CSUN has also scored 15 or more runs on three occasions. The 15 runs are most for the Matadors in a road game since scoring 18 times at Seattle University in 2010.
Weiss collected his 10th multiple-hit game of the season while Bohning notched his ninth. Recording a walk on the night, Cooper has reached base safely in 11-straight games.
The Matadors resume Big West play this weekend against Long Beach State. The series opener is set for Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. An audio only broadcast will be available on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health with Ross Porter on the call at 2:45 p.m.
