IRVINE, Calif.—CSUN extended its women's tennis dual winning streak to five Sunday as the Matadors defeated UC Irvine 5-2.
CSUN swept the doubles action to claim the initial point of the day.Â
"Doubles was excellent today," said CSUN head coach Gary Victor. "Monik and Skyla are a dominant team and Emma and Arpe stepped up with an outstanding confidence. Mari and Alicia worked through the match very well together."
The Anteaters' Stephanie Hazell defeated Monika Van de Vondel 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 at No. 1 singles to get on the board. Alicia Dinkelmeyer won her ninth straight singles match at No. 2. Dinkelmeyer defeated Stephanie Nguyen 6-1 in the first set before Nguyen retired.
Skyla Alcon went to three sets at No. 3 singles, but came away with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory against Flora Amiri. UCI's Chen Yulin defeated Kiryang Kim at No. 4 singles. The match was tied at one before Kim retired. Mari Taslagyan won her ninth straight singles match. She defeated Arianna Tilbury 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 5. Emma Roenholt defeated Jacqueline Tsodkiova 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6 singles for the fifth CSUN point.
"We made a goal to win the weekend and we are very proud of the way the team rose to the occasion (s)," said Victor. "Having Ki back for the first time since February and Emma finding her game after an 11-month layoff have been keys to our performance."
The Matadors return to the court next Friday when CSUN hosts Long Beach State.
"This is a very close group," Victor said. "It's great to see them gelling after a very difficult start."
