Matadors Wrap Up Home Schedule with UC Davis

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (21-26, 9-9 BWC) opens up its final home series of the season this Friday against UC Davis at 3 p.m. The three-game series will continue on Saturday and conclude Sunday with start times set for 1 p.m. each day. Audio broadcasts will be available for the first two games of the series and Sunday's home finale will stream live on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health with Ross Porter on the call. Sunday's series finale will be Senior Day at Matador Field as CSUN will honor its senior class consisting of Albee Weiss, Justin Toerner, Nolan Bumstead, Alvaro Rubalcaba, Kevin Riley, Riley Conlan, Alex Hull, Tei Vanderford, Andrew Weston, Hayden Shenefield and Quint Robinson in a special pregame ceremony. Fans are encouraged to come early for the Senior Day festivities prior to first pitch.Â
Cal State Fullerton leads the Big West with a 12-3 record followed by UC Irvine (8-7) and Cal Poly (8-7). Tied for fourth place is CSUN and Hawai'i with 9-9 records while UC Santa Barbara and Long Beach State are tied for sixth (7-8), UC Davis is eighth (7-11) and UC Riverside is ninth (5-10). The Matadors are 4.5 games back of first place but just one-half game back of second.Â
CSUN dropped a 6-3 decision to Fresno State on Tuesday at Matador Field. The Bulldogs raced out to a 6-1 lead before the Matadors cut the deficit to three runs in the seventh inning. The Matadors brought the winning run to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the ninth but Fresno State would hold on for the win.Â
Bumstead collected three hits including a second-inning solo home run against Fresno State while Trevor Casanova extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a double. Weston worked four innings, allowing two runs, and Blake Schriever tossed three shutout innings in relief.Â
Heading into the weekend, Casanova leads the Big West in batting average (.376), hits (67) and doubles (17) while he is second in runs scored (36), third in slugging (.539) and fourth in on-base percentage (.440). Eighth in the nation in home runs (16), Weiss is first in the league in homers, RBI (51) and total bases (114), second in slugging percentage (.585) and tied for seventh in hits (55). As a team, the Matadors are first in runs (285), doubles (85), home runs (59), RBI (272), extra base hits (155), hit by pitch (79) and slugging percentage (.451).Â
The Matadors will send the junior trio of Walker Armstrong (2-4), Isaiah Nunez (1-1) and Matt Acosta (5-5) to the mound this weekend against UC Davis. The team's Friday starter, Armstrong is sporting a 3.79 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 73.2 innings of work as he is coming off a complete game win at UC Santa Barbara last week. Nunez has worked 48.2 innings and struck out 35 batters to go with a 4.07 ERA. Leading the team in wins, Acosta has also struck out 35 batters and posted a 4.08 ERA in 57.1 innings this season.Â
In a series dating back to 1990, UC Davis leads CSUN all time, 25-15. The Aggies have won eight of 10 series with the Matadors since joining the Big West Conference as well as 10 of 13 overall. After CSUN swept UC Davis two seasons ago at Matador Field, the Aggies took two of three in Davis in 2017. Nolan Bumstead is posting a career .364 batting average (12-for-33) against the Aggies including going 4-for-10 with an RBI last season. CSUN is seeking its fifth Big West series win for the first time since 2002.Â
A Closer Look at UC Davis
The Aggies are 15-28 this season and 7-13 away from Dobbins Stadium. UC Davis suffered a three-game sweep at the hands of Cal State Fullerton last weekend but the Aggies picked up a road series win at Long Beach State the previous weekend. At the plate, the Aggies are third in the conference in doubles (83) to go with a .278 batting average and 21 home runs. On the pitching side, the staff is posting a 5.35 ERA as opposing hitters are batting .309.Â
Junior Ryan Anderson is second in the Big West in batting (.354) and third in hits (63) to go with five home runs, 31 RBI and a .511 slugging percentage. Fellow junior, Caleb Van Blake is tied with Anderson for the team lead in RBI (31) as he is batting .267 with five home runs. Starting Friday, senior right hander Matt Blais (3-6) has a 5.32 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 67.2 innings. Rounding out the weekend rotation, freshman right hander Jared Sasaki (3-5) is sporting a 4.94 ERA and 28 strikeouts while junior left hander Chris Brown (3-5) has a 5.68 ERA and 30 strikeouts.Â
