Matadors Take Opener with UC Davis, 6-2

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Walker Armstrong tossed 6.2 effective innings as CSUN Baseball (22-26, 10-9 BWC) took the opener of a three-game series from UC Davis 6-2 on Friday afternoon at Matador Field. Brandon Bohning went 2-for-4 with two runs including a two-run blast while Trevor Casanova posted a 2-for-3 day with a run scored and an RBI.Â
Coming off a complete game victory last week against UC Santa Barbara, Armstrong would be strong again on Friday. Earning his fourth quality start of the season, Armstrong pitched into the seventh inning and allowed just two runs on seven hits to go with three strikeouts.Â
The Aggies had perhaps their best chance to plate multiple runs against Armstrong in the second inning. After Ryan Hooper singled to start the inning, Armstrong walked the next two batters to load the bases with nobody out. Armstrong would quickly regroup on the mound and force Logan Denholm to hit into a 5-4-3 double play, which scored the game's first run. The right hander escaped further trouble by striking out Brad Pluschkell to end the inning.Â
UC Davis starter Matt Blais blanked the Matadors through the first two innings but ran into trouble in the third. Alvaro Rubalcaba and Bohning began the inning with singles to center field, putting runners at the corners. After Justin Toerner worked a walk, the Matadors had the bases loaded with none out. The tandem of Casanova and Albee Weiss then delivered with sacrifice flies to give the Matadors a 2-1 lead.Â
CSUN remained in front by a run until the fifth where the Matadors created breathing room with a four-run frame. Much like the third, Rubalcaba began the frame with a single. Bohning followed with a two-run homer over the left field wall to extend the lead to three. Two batters later, Casanova reached on a single before Weiss delivered a groundball to short. Tanner Murray tried to force out Casanova at second base but instead threw wildly into left field, putting runners at the corners.
CSUN took advantage of the Aggie miscue as Kevin Riley rifled an RBI single through the left side to score Casanova. Weiss scored the Matadors' sixth run via a wild pitch, putting CSUN on top 6-1 through five.Â
After working out of the jam in the second, Armstrong took control on the mound. He would shut out the Aggies over the next four frames as he scattered four hits over that span. In the sixth, he retired the first two batters before Joseph Myers and Cameron Briggs picked up back-to-back singles. Armstrong shook off the hits and forced Denholm to hit into a fielder's choice on the next pitch, ending the frame.Â
Already over 100 pitches, Armstrong marched back out to the mound in the seventh. He would strike out Pluschkell and then set down Alex Aguiar for the first two outs of the inning. However, the Aggies fought back as Murray and Calen Van Blake both singled to keep the inning alive. Head coach Greg Moore went to the mound and made the call to the bullpen signaling the end of the day for Armstrong. Hayden Shenefield entered the fray and was greeted with an RBI single from Ryan Anderson, cutting the CSUN lead to 6-2. Hooper stepped to the plate next but fouled out to end the inning.Â
Shenefield tossed a scoreless eighth inning, pitching around a leadoff single from Myers. In the ninth, Shenefield retired the side in order on just seven pitches to secure a CSUN win. On the day, he worked 2.1 shutout innings out of the bullpen as he struck out three Aggie batters. In Big West play, Shenefield has not allowed a run in 14 innings, which spans 10 appearances.Â
Casanova collected his 20th multiple-hit game of the season in the victory. The Matador backstop has hit safely in 41 of 48 games including 18 Big West contests. Elsewhere in the lineup, Nolan Bumstead (2-for-4) notched his 13th multiple-hit game of the year while Rubalcaba (2-for-3) and Bohning each posted their 12th.Â
The Matadors go for the series win on Saturday afternoon with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. An audio only broadcast will be available on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health with Ross Porter on the call.Â
