Matadors Travel to No. 17 UCLA in Midweek Action

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (24-26) opens up it final road trip of the regular season Tuesday at No. 17 UCLA. The action will start at 4:30 p.m. as the teams will complete their suspended game from March 14 at 4:30 p.m. before meeting in their regularly scheduled contest at approximately 6 p.m. UCLA will provide live stats and a live audio broadcast.Â
Two months ago, the Bruins led the Matadors 3-2 in bottom of the eighth before the game was suspended due to rain. Prior to the stoppage, Alvaro Rubalcaba and Joey Cooper led off the Matador eighth with singles bringing Trevor Casanova to the plate with nobody out. The teams will pick up right where they left off on March 14 with Casanova due up and CSUN trailing by just a run. The Matadors will be the home team for the remainder of the contest.Â
CSUN will play its final seven remaining regular season games on the road. CSUN heads to Cal State Fullerton this weekend for a three games series (May 17, 19-20) before wrapping up the regular season next weekend at USC (May 24-26).Â
CSUN is coming off a three-game sweep of UC Davis last weekend at Matador Field. The Matadors took the opener, 6-2, and won the final two games of the series on walk-off hits from seniors Riley Conlan and Kevin Riley. CSUN received quality starts from all three of its starters in the sweep. Walker Armstrong went 6.2 innings, allowing two runs while Isaiah Nunez worked 6.2 innings, yielding just a run. Matt Acosta capped off the weekend giving up just two runs in six innings of work. CSUN's bullpen also pitched a clean 9.2 innings in the series.Â
On Saturday, Conlan clinched the series for the Matadors with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th. A day later, Riley smacked a dramatic walk-off three-run home run on Senior Day. Casanova, who collected six hits in the series, extended his hitting streak to 21-straight games.Â
With the sweep last weekend, the Matadors moved into second place in the Big West standings with a 12-9 record. Cal State Fullerton leads the conference (14-4) with six games remaining on its schedule. UC Irvine sits in third place (10-8) followed by Hawai'i (9-9), Long Beach State (9-9), Cal Poly (9-9), UC Santa Barbara (8-10), UC Davis (7-14) and UC Riverside (6-12).Â
Heading into the final two weeks of the season, Casanova leads the Big West in batting (.384), hits (73) and doubles (18) while he is second in runs (37) and third in on-base percentage and slugging (.542). Weiss is atop both the home runs (16) and RBI (53) categories in the Big West and he is also second in slugging (.571) and tied for seventh in runs (33).
UCLA leads the all-time series with CSUN 42-40-1 after the teams split two meetings last season. Back on March 14, Kyle Barret gave the Matadors a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the second inning before the Bruins answered with two in the fourth. Weiss smacked a game-tying solo home run in the sixth and the game remained deadlocked until UCLA put up a single run in the top of the eighth. Hayden Shenefield worked 2.2 shutout innings to start the contest while Theron Kay worked 1.1 innings of shutout work. Blake Schriever allowed a run in 1.2 innings and is the pitcher of record for the moment.Â
A Closer Look at UCLA
The Bruins are 31-16 this season and 15-9 in Pac-12 play. UCLA is 18-6 at Jackie Robinson Stadium with two of its losses coming to Big West teams in Long Beach State (April 10) and UC Irvine (April 17). Last weekend, the Bruins dropped two of three at Washington. The team is currently ninth in the nation in ERA (3.12), 10th in fielding percentage (.980) and 20th in on-base percentage (.397).Â
Sophomore Chase Strumpf leads the team with a .369 batting average to go with 10 home runs and 47 RBI. In March, Strumpf hit a two-run home run against the Matadors and scored twice. Fellow sophomore, Michael Toglia is the team leader in home runs (11), RBI (49) and doubles (18) as he is batting .322 at the plate. As a team, the Bruins are batting .288 and slugging .431.Â
